Unfortunately they don't last forever and are considered to be a major wear item which must be replaced before they completely wear out and damage the brake rotor costing you more in repairs. Brake pads can be made of several materials such as a semi-metallic compound, ceramic compound, or organic. Brake pads are suggested to be checked frequently during oil changes or routine services for wear to ensure you have at least the minimum pad thickness as stated by the car manufacturer.

Akebono front brake pads 2008 GL450
First time trying these brake pads always have put Mercedes dusty soft brake pads. Hopefully less dust with these! Good reviews I read about them. They brake good and no noise so far. It comes with 2 sensors but my 2008 GL450 only takes one sensor in the front for some reason.

Front Akebono Brake Pads
ML550 - These pads were much better than the OEM replaced by the Mercedes dealer. I am going to now replace the rear pads for the same reason.

Non-OEM Pad
At approximately 40k miles the OEM front brakes were still in good shape, but I was tired of the massive amount of brake dust. I installed these pads along with brand new OEM rotors ('08 E350 4-Matic) with the results showing almost immeasurable brake dust, however, the pedal feel and initial bite became non-existent. It takes more pedal pressure to achive a worthwhile breaking effect. With that said at 200K miles (approximately 160k miles, yes 160k) the pads had worn less than 2mm (yes 2mm), if it weren't for some heat spotting on the rotor cuasing a pulsation while braking they would still be on the car. In summery these are not performance pads, but they'll last the lifetime of the vehicle.
