Engine Air Filter

An engine air filter is a critical component of a vehicle's intake system, allowing clean fresh outside air to enter the combustion chamber and prevent dust, dirt, and other contaminants from entering the engine. Your engine's air filter sits within the air intake box and traps particles as air flows into the engine. This ensures that only clean air reaches the combustion chamber, which provides optimal engine performance and fuel efficiency and reduces emissions.

Engine Air Filter Failure Symptoms
  • Clogging: Over time, your air filter can become clogged with dirt, dust, and debris, reducing the amount of fresh air that reaches the engine. This can lead to poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions.
  • Moisture Contamination: Exposure to excessive moisture, whether from driving in heavy rain or through water, can cause the air filter to become saturated. A wet filter can restrict airflow, further deteriorate over time, and lead to potential engine damage.
  • Age: Over time, the materials in the air filter can degrade, losing their ability to filter out contaminants effectively. An old air filter may become brittle and prone to tearing. It is recommended to inspect your engine air filter every 15 - 30,000 miles
  • Decreased Fuel Efficiency: When the air filter is blocked, the engine struggles to get the proper air-fuel mixture, causing it to burn more fuel to compensate, resulting in reduced fuel efficiency and reduced performance
  • Misfire: Inadequate airflow can lead to incomplete combustion, causing the engine to misfire, which might cause hesitation or weak power build-up under load.

Fits far too tightly
Installed in early January of '26 on my '85 300D. It was tight going on but a solid steady push did the trick and I didn't think anything was abnormal. Car is a running project/occasional driver so the filter only has about 50 miles on it now in April. I had to remove the air cleaner housing this week and the filter was on so tightly I could not remove it without destroying it, I really tried, I did not want to have to buy a new filter or wait for it to be delivered. Unfortunately, after messing with it for a wile the foam ripped and rendered the filter useless. After googling, I discovered other instances of this with Mann filters discussed on the usual online 300D communities. After reading those threads I just ordered a new Hengst filter. It hasn't arrived yet but I'm hoping it fits like every other air filter I've encountered in my lifetime. I really didn't think removing an air filter was going to be the most one of the most difficult projects I've tackled (to date).

Not for Euro OM617 NA.
Quality product as always from Mann. Note: This does not fit early 80's Euro 300D with the OM617 NA engine. This filter is too tall for the Euro air filter housing.

Filter is way too tight
Filter is way too tight for the airbox of my 85' 300SD, works exactly like you expect. But this looks that is an ocurring issue with the Mann air filter. I am still a big fan of MANN, but next time i'm definitely buying Hengst.

Filter Fits Too Tightly
Air filter fit too tightly on my 1985 Mercedes 300D. It was difficult to first install and was even more difficult to remove. When I went to remove it after about 5,000 miles and maybe four months, I found that it had fused to the inner perforated metal cylinder of the air filter housing. The rubberish bits that are supposed to seal it had somehow completely stuck to the filter housing. It became impossible to remove non-destructively even with plenty of force and the use of little shims to try and separate it from the metal it had fused to. No amount of gentle or firm pulling from the top or bottom or even creative measures like string, shims, and trim puller tools has been able to budge it. My engine didn't overheat or anything, so I cannot understand why the pinkish rubber bits have totally stuck to the filter housing. It's still stuck in place, actually. I do not know if I received a defective part or not, since I have not bought this filter before or since, but I do know mine got completely stuck in the filter housing, which is unusual and unacceptable.
