Alternator Tool

  • 2-part splined wrench required for removal and replacmenet of free-wheel drive pulleys found on Mercedes Benz and Volvo alternators. T50 Torx bit end locks alternator in place while splined sleeve inserts into pulley.
  • Splined sleeve O.D. 19.4mm

Alternator

If your car is running out of power (literally) it's likely due to a worn or failing alternator. Your vehicles car battery is responsible for storing enough energy to start the car while the alternator powers all the vehicles systems with the engine running while maintaining a battery charge. If your car dies while driving and the battery has little to no charge it's most likely due to a failed or failing alternator. Before condemning an alternator you can perform a simple test with a DVOM (digital volt meter). Also make sure the belt which drives the alternator is properly tensioned as well.

Alternator Failure Symptoms
  • Battery drains while car is running
  • Low voltage generated while car is running
  • Dim or flickering headlights
  • Dim or flickering interior lights
  • Electrical systems such as the radio, power windows, sunroof do not function

Heads up, this may be the wrong tool for alternator decoupler change
2010 Volvo XC70 T6: This tool worked previously to install the Accessory Drive Belt Pulley - INA 31316803 when changing the serp belt and idlers, etc, so I thought I was all set to change the alternator decoupler. However, with the new Volvo Alternator Decoupler Kit - INA 31316804, on hand, the alternator out of the vehicle, I attempted to use the CTA 1072 tool. The 33-spline sleeve is correct, but NOT the torx end which inserts into the pulley. What's needed is a 14-mm XZN triple square bit which has more grooves. Luckily, my local mechanic had the correct tool + impact wrench and we were able to detach the old coupler from the alternator and install the new part. Suggest a little homework before you've got your alternator on then bench and are attempting to change the decoupler.

The tool you need for P3 6 cylinder Alternator de-coupler pulley.
Works great, and is reasonably priced. If you want to do an s-belt on a Volvo 6, (3.2/3.0l), this is the only "special" tool needed. You will need it to remove the alternator de-coupler pulley.
