Product Information

ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

A wheel speed sensor, also known as an ABS wheel speed sensor, is part of your vehicles anti lock brake system. The wheel speed sensor measures the exact speed of a corner of your vehicle. In total all vehicles with an ABS system will have four sensors. The wheel speed sensors are also used as reference points for traction control as well as stability control.

The wheel speed sensor measures wheel speed via a reluctor wheel or magnet located near the wheel hub. On some vehicles the reluctor can be part of the wheel bearing or it may be present on the wheel hub or axle. In some cases, a bad wheel bearing can be the cause for an ABS fault so it's recommended to do a full diagnoses on the ABS system and correlated parts before going into a repair

Depending on the vehicle the ABS wheel speed sensor may be a serviceable item or it may be part of a wheel hub assembly. In either case, a failed ABS wheel speed sensor will cause the ABS system to stop functioning and will also likely cause other systems such as traction and stability control to not function as well.

ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Failure Symptoms
  • ABS light illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Stability and traction control not functional
  • ABS non functioning

OBD Codes
For those unsure about what their OBD codes are telling them, I got the following on my Autel MP808 1) ETC Electronic transmission control: 118 (RR rpm signal transmitted by the control module 'N47-5 (ESP Speed-sensitive Power Steering (SPS/PML) and Brake Assist System (BAS) control module) via the CAN bus is intermittently implausible 147 (The gear is sporadically implausible or the transmission is sporadically slipping) 2) ESP Electronic stability program: : C1103-4 (right rear sensor: loose contact) 3) ESM Electronic sensor module: P1860 (The right rear rpm signal transmitted by the traction system via CAN bus is implausible) 4) BAS Brake Assist: C1025-2 (CAN bus CAN message Anti-lock brake system is faulty) 5) VR Vario Roof: B1268 (Speed sensor: Status signal is invalid) This pointed to the RR sensor, especially as the reading while driving is 0.7 kph (which is the null reading). However, it also could be a wire to the sensor (inspection with tire off showed no damage). I presume error B1268 is the speed sensor telling the roof it won't be allowed to be raised or lowered if the car is going to fast, but with a dud sensor, the roof does not get the information it expects, so it throws up its own error.
