Product Information

Complete windshield cowl kit with upper windshield cowl, lower firewall cover, and mounting hardware

Your E39 is a timeless vehicle. Over the course of tens of thousand of miles and constant exposure to the elements you may start to notice trim pieces are showing wear or complete disintegrating.

The windshield cowl cover is made from a black plastic that has been known to fade in color and crack from weather exposure. This piece is easily noticeable and if you care about the appearance of your BMW it's likely something that bothers you.

Additionally, the lower firewall cover is a piece that is constantly exposed to extreme heating and cooling cylces due to it's proximity to the engine. This piece is made out of a compressed foam that essentially beings to fall apart exposing wiring and your wiper motor/linkage assembly.

Instead of buying all these pieces individually why not consider replacing them all together at the same time? Restore your BMW's appearance today.

Cowl Cover

A cowl cover is a plastic or metal panel located at the base of the windshield, covering the area between the hood and the windshield. It serves to protect windshield wiper components, cabin air filters, and ventilation inlets from debris, water, and dirt while also improving aerodynamics and appearance.

Cowl Cover Failure Symptoms
  • Water leaks into the cabin, often onto the floor or dashboard, due to cracks or poor sealing.
  • Rattling or vibration noises from loose or broken mounting points.
  • Debris accumulation in HVAC system, leading to reduced airflow or foul odors if the cover is damaged or missing.

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Windshield Cowl
To update my review from above this is a perfect kit, just realize that you will also need the cowl cover plug due to the new placement of a mounting hole that has no way to be secured and leaves the original mounting spot covered up by the cowl. It’s easy to drill a hole in the cowl to secure it where it needs to be since it’s plastic and has the hole shape molded on the back. To cover the leftover hole buy part number 51717020032 for around 4 dollars to cover it up. I didn’t realize the cap was also available for purchase so if you do the job get it as well although it would be nice if it were included in this kit. Other than that perfect fitment and quality!

Windshield cowl replacement
This product worked great! Only issue was the misalignment of the second to last hole on the drivers side for the cowl screws to be inserted. It’s places in the wrong spot, not allowing you to insert a screw to keep the cowl in place, leaving you with an extra retaining screw and an open hole. Don’t know why this change was made and you can see a mark where the original opening used to be. I think a plug should have been included in case the modified hole doesn’t align with your car. Mine is a 98’ 528i. Otherwise great product!

Works Great!
Every part you need to replace your inevitably crumbling windshield cowl - I'd recommend replacing the trim (1318159784) while you're at it. If you're replacing these parts due to age that trim is almost certainly disintegrating too. Also, be sure to buy/rent a puller for the wiper arms.
