Product Information

45X85X41mm, presses into front wheel carrier

If you can hear a humming sound at highway speeds or a grinding noise wheel while taking corners at slow speeds there is a good chance you need to replace your BMW's wheel bearings. The wheel bearings are a critical part of the drivetrain and need to be replaced when worn. A good bearing will make no noise when the wheel hub is turned while a bad bearing will often make a crunching or grinding noise.

Wheel Bearing

Wheel bearings support the vehicle's weight and reduce rotational friction, located within the wheel hub/spindle. European car manufacturers typically use three types of wheel bearings: unsealed, sealed press-in, and wheel bearing/hub assemblies.

Unsealed bearings, common in pre-1990 cars, require regular greasing, while sealed bearings, used from the 1990s onward, are maintenance-free and must be replaced when worn. The most modern approach integrates the wheel bearing into the hub assembly, simplifying replacement by bolting in a new unit.

Signs of failure include a grinding noise, which worsens over time. Diagnosing involves lifting the car to check for wheel play and noise. Replacement processes differ: unsealed bearings need cleaning and proper alignment, sealed bearings require pressing out, and hub assemblies are straightforward to unbolt and replace. Correct torque application is vital for all types to prevent premature failure.

Wheel Bearing Failure Symptoms
  • Grinding or growling: A bad wheel bearing will first reveal itself by making a growling or grinding noise when unloaded, IE if turning right, the right side will make noise. Eventually, as it gets worse, so will the sound until it’s replaced
  • Play in the wheel: With the wheel off the ground, you will detect play from a worn wheel bearing. This is because the internal bearings have worn away and are no longer perfectly tight.
  • Vibration or wobble: While much less frequent, if a wheel bearing is very bad or has an excessive amount of play in it, it will cause issues with the vehicle's handling, including vibration or wobble noticeably through the steering wheel.
  • Uneven Tire Wear: A faulty Wheel Bearing can adversely affect tire wear and cause uneven wear across the tire contact patch.
  • ABS warning light: If you are chasing an ABS issue and you have sorted out the sensors, it’s not impossible that damage has occurred to the ABS tone ring inside of the wheel bearing. If you have a single corner fault but the ABS sensor checks out, replace the wheel bearing and in turn the tone ring.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
There are 2 FCP "Q&A" answers at for the same bearing that seem to contradict each other with regard to where the pulse ring/reluctor ring is located: For SKU: FAG-580191D (this bearing): The answer is "The reluctor ring will be on the side of the bearing where you will see the COO Slovakia on the bearing this will be the inner portion of the bearing and the part that will face the spindle as you press it on and interface with the abs sensor. This is the side that will be chamfered for easy installation." However for SKU: KIT-580191DKT (bearing kit): The answer is "Yes, the reluctor ring will be a part of the bearing and the labeling side of the bearing would be the outside (facing you during installation) how it would be installed." One says labeling side is on the inside, and the other says the labeling side is on the outside. Can you confirm which is correct? There is no chambered end to this bearing. Also, I bought the Ate magnetic strip to confirm myself, but it doesn't work on these bearings. Thank you in advance!
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Thank you for calling that out, I will review the previous responses here and update or delete as needed. I have the bearing in hand. The outer race will have a black chamfered edge and this is the side that faces the inside of the hub as you press it into the spindle. It is also the side that will have the ring for the reluctor and the country of origin of the bearing (Slovakia) stamped on the inner race.
Question Posted by a customer
I'm not understanding previous Q&A stating which side of the bearing has the reluctor ring because there is a black seal on both sides of the bearing. On one end of this bearing there is the labeling (manufacturer, part#, etc) written on the inner race. On this end also is a 2mm or so black strip on the side of the bearing. The other end of the bearing does not have this labeling or 2mm black strip. Which side of the bearing has the reluctor ring so that I install it in the correct direction? Thank you!
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The reluctor ring will be on the side of the bearing where you will see the COO Slovakia on the bearing this will be the inner portion of the bearing and the part that will face the spindle as you press it on and interface with the abs sensor. This is the side that will be chamfered for easy installation.
Question Posted by a customer
Does this bearing have the magnetic ring for the ABS sensor?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes. It can be seen on the second image with the black race seal (the tone ring is in the seal). The black seal is installed inward. This is also notable because the side of the bearing with the black seal also has a chamfer which needs to go in first when the bearing is pressed to ensure it presses in evenly.
