Product Information

Controls the variable camshaft timing in each cylinder head, a common failure item on higher mileage vehicles

This solenoid threads into the front of your M62 engines cylinder head. It pressurizes engine oil to control the position of the intake camshaft. This solenoid can become clogged over time resulting in VANOS related errors.

Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid

An Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid is an essential component of an engine's variable valve timing system. It controls the flow of oil to the VVT system, which adjusts the timing of the opening and closing of the engine's intake and exhaust valves. This adjustment allows for optimal engine performance, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions by enabling the engine to operate more efficiently across different RPM ranges.

Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid Failure Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light: A malfunctioning VVT solenoid often triggers the Check Engine light. Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the VVT system may be stored in the vehicle's onboard diagnostics, indicating an issue with the solenoid or related components
  • Poor Engine Performance: If the VVT solenoid is failing, it can cause the engine to experience poor acceleration, hesitation, or overall reduced power. This is often due to incorrect valve timing affecting the engine's ability to breathe properly
  • Rough Idling: A faulty VVT solenoid can result in unstable or rough idling, as the engine may struggle to maintain a consistent RPM due to improper valve timing adjustments

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

An easy install once I bought the socket made for removing/installing these. Don't bother trying to find a 'normal' socket which will do double duty for this jonb. Either they will be too thick to fit in the opening on the front of the engine or they will be too shallow to fit over the solenoid. Seems to me the engine runs better. I replaced them because I think this was the source of oil into my wiring harness - wicked all the way up into my computer as well as all the other exit points on the wiring harness. But with over 200K miles I'm sure they were overdue

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Ziyad
Could a failed solenoid cause an Over advanced timing code on the intake cam?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, this p/n is commonly associated with timing codes on your vehicle.
Question Posted by a customer
If you test it with 12 volts does the solenoid move more than 3 millimeters? I've seen other solenoids on youtube for other models other than the 540i series and they seem to move way more than quarter of an inch and look like they move the sprockets in the vanos system. Please advise. Thanks.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This solenoid doesn't directly actuate the VANOS system per se. The system relies on oil pressure in order to adjust the cam/crank correlation. It's oil flow into the VANOS hub that changes the position of the camshaft. This solenoid simply controls oil flow and nothing more. There is no specified travel specification because solenoids function as an on-off switch. It either moves/actuates or it doesn't.
Question Posted by a customer
Does the perforated cylinder shake in it's base? I know the center part moves, but I am interested in the outer cylinder. The ones I took out of my car are attached to the base but feel like they can be taken apart into two pieces. I've seen quite a few videos on youtube and nobody mentions or shows them loose or moving. Please advise. Thanks
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes. The outer cylinder does have some movement in it but wouldn't describe it as loose.
Question Posted by a customer
Does the solenoid come with the o rings needed when replacing the part? If not can you tell me which o rings to purchase along with the solenoid?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This solenoid does not come with any additional components. Additionally, this valve is not sealed with an o-ring. It is sealed with a gasket that is attached to the upper timing cover. Please see p/n [11141435023](/products?keywords=11141435023&search_only=parts) for the required sealing flange.
