Keeps your trunk open for easy access, 2 per car

The gas struts that keep your trunk open are an important replacement item. Besides being designed and intended to keep the trunk open they allow you easy access in and out of the trunk. If your BMW's trunk won't stay open we recommend replacing the trunk struts.

Must be replaced in pairs.

Trunk Lid Lift Support

The trunk lid lift support, also sometimes called a trunk strut or trunk shock, is a gas-charged cylinder that helps support and lift the trunk lid of a vehicle. Some trunk lift supports are also electric or hydraulic depending on the vehicle’s equipment. The trunk lift support assists the opening of the trunk or hatch, making it easier to open and sometimes opening it automatically. When you open the trunk, the lifting rod extends to push the lid open, ensuring it stays in place. Trunk lid supports remove the need to hold the trunk while loading and unloading and prevent it from slamming shut accidentally. Most European vehicles have a pair of supports, but occasionally there is just one. They are usually held onto the body and the trunk via posts and retaining clips, making them an easy DIY for most vehicle owners.

As a vehicle ages and the trunk support goes through hundreds of actuations, trunk lid lift supports will wear out and fail primarily due to the internal seal on the extending rod failing and losing pressure. When that happens, the trunk lid will feel heavier to open and slam shut unexpectedly. When replacing trunk lid supports that use a flat clip and post-mounting design, we recommend wearing some type of mechanic gloves since the retaining clips can be somewhat sharp and move unexpectedly when applying leverage with a screwdriver.

Trunk Lid Lift Support Failure Symptoms
  • Internal Leaks: If the gas piston is leaking internally, the trunk lid lift support won’t be able to leverage the trunk open
  • Age/Corrosion/Rust: If the trunk lift supports are exposed to the elements or are very old, it could hinder smooth operation, causing dead spots in the operation

Works perfect
The OE trunk lid struts on my Z3 were almost completely shot. I had to lift the lid up all the way before the struts would hold it open. A small gust of wind could cause it to slam down. (ouch!) I installed a pair of these and now the lid opens itself, without excessive force, after lifting it about 1/4 of the way. It would require a durn strong gust of wind to knock it down and even then, it wouldn't come down hard. I'm not sure if this is the correct way to install but it worked well and was an easy 15 minute job. After removing the old struts, I filled the new sockets with grease, slid the clips toward the end of the strut with the help of a small screwdriver then, I pressed the sockets onto the ball and slid the clips forward to lock. I would recommend these to restore the function of your trunk lid mechanism.

Perfect pressure, doesn't move up quickly until about half and then it pops up smoothly. Closes well, takes a little slam sometimes.

BMW Trunk Lid Lift Support - Stabilus
Bought Stabilus replacement for factory parts on a BMW Z3. Excellent quality and works like new. Told a friend to buy this brand, too, but he went to "a popular on-line store" and bought their recommendation that was Chinese made and does NOT work like Stabilus and he now regrets that choice.

These were great - I don't know why I suffered with the originals for so long bonking my head. These popped right in five minutes after arrival! Very satisfying.

The part is a direct fit. It comes pre-greased and ready for install. I apparently went too long without these supports, so I don't remember how the originals worked. I do know that these force the trunk open automatically when it is opened to just a few inches, and I nearly have to slam the trunk to get it to shut. I almost removed one of the supports for easier operation, but I figure that might not be good on the trunk hinges.
