Transfer Case Motor

A transfer case motor is part of a vehicle's drivetrain that helps transfer power from the transmission to the axles. A bad transfer case can also damage the transmission by causing uneven power distribution and increased strain on the transmission components. A faulty transfer case motor can cause several issues, including:

About Odometer Gears

Owned by Jeff Caplan, Odometer Gears started out when the Owner of the company needed to replace the Odometer gear on his 1980 BMW 528I to complete the restoration of the vehicle. However, after searching from repair shop to repair shop, everyone want to sell him the entire cluster repair service or in some cases the entire instrument cluster itself which could cost up to $1600 installed. Once he made his first gear, word got out and he quickly started getting orders from other enthusiasts. Today, Odometer Gears still has the passion and drive to make inexpensive solutions to repair expensive components by developing smaller parts to repair them.

haven't installed it yet
I've had this part for years waiting for the original gear currently in service to fail as commonly known, NOPE, Not yet! I know this is a good gear designed as improvement over the original part, however, I change my fluid every 50K so, maybe I'm doing something others are not? Maybe I'll hand it off to the next owner.......... at 250K

it work out well, this is the second time this has failed me. Original lasted 90k replacement lasted about the same. First replacement didn't purchase from FCP. This one I did, we'll see how long this will run. Replacing the gear is a much cheaper option than complete replacement of the actuator. And the abs,4x4 lights are out again.

Was working on 2008 BMW X3, had classic symptoms of transfer case not engaging, the dash lights were on. Took out the transfer case motor, and disassembled to find stripped gear. Used this replacement gear to put everything together. Only time will tell if the new gear will be better. Replacement was a perfect match in every aspect.

This part and a little patience can save you $1,000.
A few minutes after you start driving, if your ABS, airbag and brake warning lights all come on, and if after you shut down your engine you hear a few clicks coming from under your car, chances are pretty good the gear in your transfer case actuator motor has some worn teeth. The dealership will tell you that you need to replace the motor, and with parts and labor its about $1200. This gear was not very hard to install with basic hand tools, and it looks to be much more sturdy than the original part. It took me about an hour to take out the motor, swap the gear, and reinstall the motor. Once the job was complete, nor more warning lights and no more clicking.

Is this gear the same quality (or better/last longer than) the gear in the BMW Transfer Case Actuator Repair Kit (Genuine BMW 27102413711)? Did BMW fix the gear material issue, or is the plastic gear in the BMW repair kit the same OE gear that was installed when the car was manufactured? If that’s the case, would this aftermarket nylon/carbon fiber reinforced gear last longer? Thanks!

The gear included in the repair kit from BMW and this gear from Odometer gears are slightly different. Odometer gears use different materials to make it more durable. The repair kit from BMW (which includes other needed items) is more or less the same as what is originally equipped from the factory.
