Product Information

Lower chain tensioner. Does not include the required gasket. P/N: 07119963355

This timing chain tensioner is mounted in the timing cover and can be removed without dis-assembly. This tensioner is likely the culprit if you have noisy timing chains.

Timing chains are like timing belts in that they keep the major components of the engine's combustion cycle in sync. Timing belt tensioners and timing chain tensioners perform the same job of keeping the chain/belt at the right tension. If the timing chain tensioner fails there is a high risk of chain failure, this it should be replaced immediately.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner

An Engine Timing Chain Tensioner preloads the timing chain to prevent slack in the timing chain system. Too much chain slack will result in derailment of the timing chain which could cause engine failure. Engine timing chain tensioners are typically oil fed so it is vital to verify you have adequate oil volume and pressure when troubleshooting the timing chain tensioner. Common failure systems include chain rattle or slap on startup, or camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner Failure Symptoms
  • Rattling or Clanking Noise: One of the most common symptoms of a failing timing chain tensioner is a noticeable rattling, clanking, or ticking noise, especially on startup. This is because the tensioner may no longer be maintaining proper tension on the chain, causing it to become loose and hit surrounding components.
  • Check Engine Light: A failing tensioner can cause timing issues that may trigger the vehicle’s check engine light. Common faults codes will correlate to a camshaft/ crankshaft fault as these sensors will detect that the timing is off.
  • Valvetrain or piston damage: As the timing being off significantly enough in an interference engine can cause the valvetrain to come into contact with the piston surface

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

E34 M60 Timing Chain Tensioner
Quality part with a very easy install. There are several videos on YouTube that show and describe the install. The biggest (but simple) issue to resolve is resetting the spring clip prior to installing the new tensioner. Pulling out the original tensioner and comparing to the new tensioner immediately showed why I was getting a little noise from the chain. Start up after new tensioner install, confirmed the need for service. Engine runs wonderfully quiet now, so take the time to service this component every 80,000-100,000 miles.

Miles better than the tensioner it replaced
Literally twice as long as the tensioner I took out. If you have an E39 540i this is an absolute MUST. Huge difference in timing chain noise on startup.

A must!
This component is important to ALL M62TU owners. The older spring loses it's tension over the years causing is little bit of slack before oil pressure is gained. With an engine with something as brittle as the timing chain guides, you definitely want to take every measure you can to ensure they are well kept and live a healthy life without failing prematurely. This is certainly one vital step in that direction. Installation is rather easy and requires a 19mm socket. Don't forget the gasket that it also requires.
