Product Information

Replacement timing chain tensioner for your M42 or M44 powered BMW

This timing chain tensioner pushes the timing chain tensioner rail in order to keep constant tension on the timing chain at all time. If you are experience timing chain "chatter" coming from the engine this may be the culprit.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner

An Engine Timing Chain Tensioner preloads the timing chain to prevent slack in the timing chain system. Too much chain slack will result in derailment of the timing chain which could cause engine failure. Engine timing chain tensioners are typically oil fed so it is vital to verify you have adequate oil volume and pressure when troubleshooting the timing chain tensioner. Common failure systems include chain rattle or slap on startup, or camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner Failure Symptoms
  • Rattling or Clanking Noise: One of the most common symptoms of a failing timing chain tensioner is a noticeable rattling, clanking, or ticking noise, especially on startup. This is because the tensioner may no longer be maintaining proper tension on the chain, causing it to become loose and hit surrounding components.
  • Check Engine Light: A failing tensioner can cause timing issues that may trigger the vehicle’s check engine light. Common faults codes will correlate to a camshaft/ crankshaft fault as these sensors will detect that the timing is off.
  • Valvetrain or piston damage: As the timing being off significantly enough in an interference engine can cause the valvetrain to come into contact with the piston surface

About INA

Almost every modern passenger car contains an INA engine and transmission component. INA is a global manufacturer of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) roller bearings, linear motion, engine components, plain bearings and precision components meaning that the original parts removed from your car will most likely have INA stamped right on it.

Today INA is a division of the Schaeffler Group, which also includes FAG and LuK, they are the second-largest bearing manufacturer in the world. Their bearings are used in the space shuttle and the Millennium Wheel in London. Schaeffler has manufacturing facilities all around the world including Danbury CT. We offer INA's full line of OE and OEM components for your European vehicle.

INA Timing Components

The timing drive is crucial for the perfect interaction between the camshaft and crankshaft. Power transmission is possible by means of a timing chain or toothed belt. Schaeffler has more than 100 years of experience in the field of chain drives and works continuously on the further development of its products in 18 research and development centers around the globe. Schaeffler is also a leading manufacturer of idler pulleys and mechanical belt tensioners for dry belt drives and belts in oil. The INA program for the independent aftermarket includes repair solutions with all relevant components for time-saving and professional repairs.

Technology leader in valve train

Irrespective of which future technologies will one day be up to date, road traffic cannot be imagined without classic combustion engines for the time being. In order to reduce consumption and emissions, an effective combustion process in the engine is crucial. The valve train is an important lever for achieving this. With its INA brand, Schaeffler is a pioneer when it comes to technical advancements in the valve train.

Worked perfectly!
Solved the startup chain rattle on my 94 E36 m42. Installed it compressed without issues. Soaked it in oil for about 10 minutes prior to installation. Within about one second from startup, the chain noise was completely gone.

two install methods
some people say to leave the tensioner compressed during installation, because its hard to reinstall the 19mm nut when the tensioner is expanded. But since I did the tensioner at the same time as a lot of other maintenance, I want to have chain tension from the moment I start it back up, to remove as many failure modes as possible. SO, I soaked the tensioner in motor oil, and installed it fully expanded. It was a fight with the motor still in the engine bay, very little clearance, and the spring is very strong. If your engine is on a stand, it shouldn't be an issue to control the spring tension during installation. If you choose to install it without expanding, remember to give the engine a 2500 rpm run for at least a minute, and hope the chain slaps the tensioner into position before the slack damages something.

Must
If you just bought a e30 or have one for some time, this is a 5-minute job and will leave you knowing that your engine won't be making funny sounds any time soon.
