Your BMW's tie rod assemblies consists of two parts; the inner tie rod that connects to the steering rack and the outer tie rod which attaches to the steering knuckle. We see high mileage tie rod assemblies develop play on the inner ball joint as well as the tie rod end ball joint. Play in these assemblies results in vague steering feel and play in the steering as well. We typically recommend replacing the tie rod assemblies as a whole instead of replacing the individual components.

Steering Tie Rod Assembly

The tie rods of your vehicle play a critical role as they're the link between the power steering rack and pinion and the wheel spindle. Tie rod ends contain ball joints that tend to wear out over time due to constant wear and tear. When the ball joints within the tie rod wear out, it allows for play within the wheels which can throw off your alignment and cause uneven tire wear. Its always encouraged to check your tie rod ends for play as well as tires for uneven wear at every service interval. When replacing worn tie rod ends its always recommend to replace them in pairs as well as to perform an alignment.

I am new to ordering parts for my 2007 BMW X3 and I was told that I needed a tie rod, I was interesting in ordering this product but do I need to order a tie rod end as well? Also if I was replacing the left and the right will this product be versatile?

This is a tie rod end assembly which includes the inner and outer tie rod end as pictured. For an E83 X3, the same tie rod is used for both the left and right side so ordering a quantity of 2 will take care of both tie rods on your vehicle.
