A common cause of cooling system performance issues

This thermostat assembly is a common wear item and usually a culprit for all sorts of issues with the cooling system. Thermostats typically fail in one of two ways. The most common failure occurs when the thermostat gets stuck in the open position. This allows coolant to continually pass through the engine preventing it from reaching operating temperature. Engines that don't run cool like this will usually receive poor gas mileage. Another failure is when the thermostat gets stuck in the closed position. This will cause your engine to constantly overheat which can damage the engine. This thermostat comes with the gasket for an easy installation.

Identical To Factory Part

Replaced factory part with this one and they are identical, down to the brand names on the housing. There's an o-ring on the small part that has the plug on it where it fits into the housing. If case this leaks in the future, it appears easy to replace, without a need to remove the housing.

Perfect fit. Used it before for another BMW. Not sure about longevity since I sold that one. We'll see how long it last on this one.

Runs 3 4ºc Warmer Than Old Bmw Thermostat.

This thermostat seems to run about 3-4ºC warmer than the OEM thermostat on my car. That said, the OEM thermostat was 100k miles old when I replaced it; it could be that they cool as they wear. When worked hard, the engine drops to around 88ºC; about 3-4ºC warmer than the OEM thermostat would keep the engine in those conditions. Honestly, the 3-4ºC change does worry me a little bit. I keep a close eye on the temps.

Thank Goodness For The Lifetime Parts Warranty!

I purchase Wahler products for my 2004 BMW 330Ci because of the value & quality and I am usually pleased with my results. Unfortunately, I have gone through 2 Wahler Thermostat Assemblies in less than 20k miles due to leaks coming from the seal around the electronic sensor on top of the thermostat. Both times I would notice a small amount of coolant seepage starting to form and I could see the blue BMW coolant start to harden around the top sensor. Within a couple more fill ups the seepage has turned into a decent leak and I have to garage my 330Ci and order another Thermostat Assembly from FCP Euro. If it was not for their Lifetime Parts Warranty I would be down some serious cash for these leaking thermostat assemblies. (Additional information: My 330CI had a complete cooling system refresh at 90k miles and is currently approaching 119k miles.)

Bmw Wahler Thermostat

This part came in a BMW labeled box so I know it was OEM. FCP always delivers the best parts. FCP always has the best prices. Even with my BMWCCA discount of 20% at the dealer I still save another 20-30% on parts at FCP Euro. And the best service after the sale anywhere.

The thermostat is OEM quality and was very easy to install. Take some time to look the the DIY videos before you start the job. I chose to get a kit from FCP Euro. I did this ecuase the price was amazing and it made sense to replace parts that were old and would be,removed during this project. All the parts I received were OEM quality and fit exact. The gasket comes with the unit.

The price was right and being OEM the fit was perfect. Extra piece of mind with the new Meyle water pump. Shipping was prompt as always with FCP.

Plastic Will Outlive The Water Pump

At 1st I was upset. I open the box and found it plastic like the one I was removing from 2001 325xi with 136,000 miles. I bought car with 90k a few years ago. Then when I removed the water pump I found the propellers where metal like the Hepu 11517527910H. Hmm am I doing this all for not. Or should I just have replaced the leaky expansion tank and had been done. Then I wiggled the old water pump and noticed the bearings starting to let the shaft wiggle. So it looks like the pump was going. So it looks like these after market water pumps don't last to long. So my point is when I replace the water pump again at 200k I will definitely change out the thermostat assembly at the same time; even if it was aluminum I would still replace it then. So why blow an extra $40 more on an aluminum housing. Get this plastic one and buy a better pump with the savings and replace both again in 60k miles. This thermostat looks solid and bolts right in. Looks identical to one I took out and electrical wiring prongs fit nice and tight. Note u will need two of the thermostat bolts to loosed the water pump assembly. So take off the water pump before putting ther back on car. The water pump comes out by removing four nuts then by screwing in two bolts and it comes out. Like screwing in a bolt on the disc rotor to make it come off. All the bolts and nuts get 89 "in"-pounds and the one big bolt gets 17 "foot" lbs.
