The purpose of the strut assembly is to dampen the recoil of the coil spring as your travel over dips and bumps in the road. Some signs of a failed strut includes knocking sounds, leaks, poor road holding, or broken brackets

The purpose of the strut assembly is it acts as a central pivot point for the suspension while housing the coil spring. It also dampens the compression and rebound of the coil spring as the suspension moves up and down. When replacing suspension components it is highly recommended to replace them in pairs.
