Control arms are a common replacement item on higher mileage BMW's. In many cases the inner bushing can fail causing excessive suspension play, knocking noises, and alignment problems. Additionally, the integrated ball joint can also wear out causing many of the same issues including noises and suspension play.

Suspension Control Arm and Ball Joint Assembly

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed:

Same as Original
Couldn't tell a difference between this part and BMW part, same logos, same name, just didn't have the BMW sticker. Took car into dealer for alignment after steering/suspension overhaul, tech wrote on my receipt, "Concern, found aftermarket parts". I had to come back the following Monday, Asked to speak with shop foreman, I brought him the old BMW control arm and showed him the Lemforder stamp and symbol on the Original BMW control arm and asked, "tell me the difference between the BMW Control Arm and this Lemforder Control Arm, and why are your techs writing that nonsense on my paperwork! This car is 14 years old.... You want me to pay for a BMW sticker? get out of here, it's the identical part without a sticker....Foreman agreed and said you take good care of that car and those are good parts.
