Product Information

Referred to as a tension strut, per BMW it is mandatory to replace in matched pairs

Your BMW's tension strut is designed to locate the entire front strut assembly. It is under constant tension from suspension movements as well as road forces. Over time the inner bushing is known to fail allowing for this assembly to move freely resulting in poor handling, vibration, and noises.

FCP recommend replacing this control arm in matched pairs per BMW TIS recommendations.

Suspension Control Arm

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed:

Suspension Control Arm Failure Symptoms
  • Play in suspension joints where these arms meet the subframe and/or knuckle
  • Buckling noise emanating from the suspension
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Inability to properly align vehicle
  • Shutter or vibration coming from the steering wheel at highway speed
  • Wandering or pulling sensation from side to side felt on the steering wheel

2014 BMW 528i xdrive
I replaced the front tension struts, lower control arms, lower ball joints, (all Lemforder) along with all the hardware, which was (BMW)... And my car drives like new. I read a review on here from someone saying the Lemforder is mushy etc. I have an all stock F10. Which is a luxury sports car. It is not an M series. Therefore I do not expect it to drive like one. The bushings in my tension struts were beyond destroyed. When I hit the brakes quick, I would feel a jolt...along with a clunking sound. Because the struts had a lot of play. In addition when I would go over speed bumps I would hear a loud swoosh sound. I decided to do the entire front end over, considering all the parts work together. I started with these three parts. Next I will replace the upper control arms, swaybar links, and struts, strut mounts etc. The entire front strut assembly. I might replace the springs as well. Not sure yet... The only tip I have is whatever parts you can replace that have overlapping labor, replace them all together...And YES you can reuse the same bolts for everything, however I didn't. Nor, do not recommend it. Spend the extra money, and buy all the hardware in BMW Brand. These bolts are locking, and you can only stretch them so much. I'd rather feel safe knowing all my bolts are new. All the noises completely went away. My car has 122K, and is extremely well maintained. It is handling excellent and exactly how it was driving when it had 50K miles... even without the entire front end replaced. However, front struts should be replaced around 100K. Therefore, I'm overdue. And plan to replace them in a few weeks. Along with the sway bar wnd links, and upper control arms. FYI, I did not do the work myself...I took all the parts to my mechanic, and all he charged was for labor and a wheel alignment. Some mechanics will say " we do not use customer parts because we can't warranty them blah blah blah" That is a nice way of them telling you, since we can't make money on you for charging you for the parts, we won't do the work. At the end of the day, find another mechanic. There are tons of them that are ok with charging straight labor. I was charged for (3) hours of labor, plus a wheel alignment.

Fixed Death Shimmy
Fixed the death wobble you get from the front bushings being shot.

They are soft and un-BMW like in handling
I replaced original F10 tension struts at ~90k miles. I had wandering & clunk on heavy braking so I decided to try the Lemforder arms. These tension struts are softer than BMW's and left the front feeling more vague than the worn-out originals. I thought it would be equivalent to original BMW, but it isn't. I heard dozens of stories of Lemforder bushings not up to par like they used to be in the past, and now I know why. I believe the Genuine OE is made by THK, but they might not make arms for the aftermarket. I ultimately pressed out the Lemforder bushings for polyurethane ones and the front now feels like a BMW instead of mushyness. The balljoint side seems fine.

Fits great. Works perfectly. Got rid of the clunking and looseness in the steering wheel. Hard part was just removing the axle bolt.
