Bilstein B8 Sport monotube shocks and struts deliver absolute mastery of the road surface for the performance-minded driver. Bilstein shocks
I've been using bilstein shocks since late 90s on all of my BMWs and getting best performance and stability everyday drive or on the race track. Bilstein HD for daily driver cars are the best but for my e39 m5 this shocks are great! better than original.

Will aftermarket springs lower my e39 M5 as opposed to the stock springs and will the stock springs work or will the ride height be higher.

Stock springs on the B8's will not give you a stock ride height unfortunately, the spring purches would sit differently on the shock body compared to factory.

Do these shocks require bump stops on the rear of a 2001 M5? OEM are a different diameter than these B8.

Yes, the shock uses factory bump stops.

While a new spring is not required, it is recommended to change the springs as well to retain optimal performance; especially if you are using the original springs depending on mileage.

What is the difference between a Bilstein B8 and a Bilstein B4? Can I put the B8 on the front and the B4 on the rear? It was recommended to me to use Bilstein Sport all around as replacement for the stock units. This is a semi-daily driver. Thanks.

Bilstein B4 Touring are OE style replacements designed to perform like original equipment in terms of ride comfort. Bilistein B8's are monotube performance shock absorber designed to work with lowering springs. It is not advised to mix/match B4's and B8's between the front and rear. B8's can be daily driven but note that because of increased damping and due to the fact they re designed to work with lowering springs they will ride much firmer than stock equipment.
