Mounts the trailing arm to the body, a common failure item on high mileage vehicles

Your BMW's rear suspension is a trailing arm style design. The trailing arm is an integral part of the rear suspension and it acts as a mounting point for other control arms, the axles, the brakes, and the wheel hubs. The trailing arm is mounted to the chassis by a bushing which bolts directly to a bracket.

A failed trailing arm bushing can cause excessive play within the suspension. Play within the trailing arm mounts will affect alignment which will lead to poor road handling. Badly worn trailing arm bushings can even cause knocking sounds from the rear suspension. We recommend replacing trailing arm bushings in matched pairs.

Suspension Trailing Arm Bushing

The suspension trailing arm bushing is a key component that connects the trailing arm to the vehicle’s chassis, allowing controlled movement and reducing vibration. Made from durable rubber or polyurethane bonded to a metal sleeve, it absorbs road shock, minimizes noise, and maintains proper suspension alignment. By cushioning the link between the suspension and frame, the trailing arm bushing helps ensure ride comfort, stability, and even tire wear.

  • Clunking or knocking noises from the rear suspension – caused by excessive play in a worn bushing.
  • Uneven tire wear or poor alignment – results from compromised suspension geometry.

The two sides of the bushing are different. Could you please confirm whether the side shown in the image should face outward when installed on the vehicle?
