Product Information

S54's have been known to have rod bearing wear issues. There doesn't seem to be a trend as to when rod bearing failure occurs as some engines go without having issues while others indicate rod bearing issues relatively quickly. This complete connecting rod bearing set from ACL is a high performance alternative to the standard connecting rod bearings offered by BMW. This set of connecting rod bearings is designed to offer maximum performance with additional built-in bearing clearance up to .025mm (.001") to help reduce bearing wear while maintaining the needed tolerances for proper engine running.

Questions about the appearance of the ACL RACE Series performance engine bearings are quite common, as this series of trimetal copper lead bearings have a very different appearance to regular after market “ACL Duraglide” trimetal bearings, which have a light silver/ grey appearance.

The ACL RACE Series performance engine bearing as manufactured have an appearance that is dark tarnished colouration, which can vary from dark black/brown/blue colours. This colour comes from the electroplated overlay that has copper as one part of its composition, which tarnishes to the dark colours described above. This tarnish colouration has negligible thickness and has no influence on bearing operation.

ACL RACE Series performance engine bearings do not start out with the silver grey appearance of regular after market bearings, as there is no final silvery tin flash applied to these bearings. Not applying a silvery tin flash to these high performance bearings is a specific design feature. A silvery tin flash for appearance and long term corrosion protection, as applied to the regular after market bearings, can under high loading and heat, move, with the plate migrating and causing high spots on the back of the shells and distorting the bearing. For this reason the ACL RACE Series performance engine bearings do not have a cosmetic silvery tin flash applied, so there is no risk of any overlay plate movement on the backs of the shells, giving better bearing to housing contact and better bearing performance and function.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Gustavo
Can you advise which bearings to purchase? I've seen these with extra clearance, over-sized and regular stock ones and not sure which to choose. Thanks!
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
You would want to perform a plastic gauge test first after removing your factory bearings in order to understand which size you will need. More often then not you will run a standard size, but you will not know until you disassemble the crankcase and remove the bearings.
Question Posted by Edgar
How do you know which bearing is meant to be the upper half and which is the lower half? Do they have the red and blue color indicators like the OEM bearings do or something like it? when it talks about clearance, is this bearing thicker or thinner than the traditional OEM bearing?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The uppers and lowers will be labeled accordingly. Additional clearance bearings allow for added oil lubrication.
