It carries low-pressure return fluid from the steering system back to the reservoir after it has been used to assist in steering. Rein Power Steering Return Hose
I cut this hose to fit when replacing the cooling loop to reservoir return hose on a 97 Z3 2.8 with the low mounted reservoir, much cheaper than factory (bulk) hose.
