Protects the inner tie rod end and steering rack from moisture and debris

Steering rack boots may not seem like a critical component but here at FCP we beg to differ. The purpose of the steering rack boot is two fold. The primary purpose of this boot is to keep dirt and moisture away from the inner steering rack seal while providing protection to the inner tie rod end joint.

Rack and Pinion Bellows

Rack and pinion bellows are protective rubber or synthetic covers also known as boots that seal and protect the rack and the joints from the rack to the spindles. They encase the steering rack's inner tie rods and prevent contaminants like dirt, debris, and moisture from entering, which can cause wear and tear on the system’s moving parts.

Rack and Pinion Bellows Failure Symptoms
  • Visible Cracks or Tears: Physical inspection may reveal cracks or splits in the bellows, allowing contaminants to enter the steering rack
  • Premature Wear of Steering Components: Damaged bellows expose the rack and pinion to dirt and moisture, which accelerates wear on the steering components, potentially leading to more frequent alignments or part replacements
