Pliers

Pliers are a type of hand tool designed to grip, bend, compress, or cut materials. They consist of two handles joined at a pivot point (like scissors), with jaws on one end and grips on the other. By squeezing the handles, the jaws apply force to hold or manipulate an object.

Key Features of Pliers

  • Pivot joint: Multiplies hand force applied at the jaws.
  • Jaws: Can be flat, serrated, curved, or cutting, depending on the type.
  • Handles: Often coated with rubber or plastic for comfort and insulation.

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Terrible Special Tool; Generic Hog Ring Pliers Work Better
This is at absolutely no fault of FCP Euro—the tool itself is simply horrible. I genuinely don’t understand why BMW designed it this way or specifies special tool 52 0 050 for this job. The first problem is leverage. The hog ring sits relatively far from the pliers’ pivot point, so you have to apply considerably more force than you should. That’s manageable if you’re installing one or two rings, but a G30 rear seat upholstery job uses almost 80 hog rings. After doing that many, the poor leverage becomes a major issue. The second, and much worse, problem is the needle-nose design. In theory, the long narrow jaws should make it easier to reach into the seat cushion. Unfortunately, the actual groove that holds the hog ring is positioned fairly far back from the tips of the jaws. I assume this was done to provide at least some leverage, because positioning the ring all the way at the tips would make the leverage even worse. The result is a terrible design for actual seat work. To push the hog ring deep enough into the cushion to grab the metal upholstery bar, you also have to push the ends of the pliers deep into the foam. The pointed jaws then stab into the seat cushion and leave two holes in the foam. Basically, these pliers are completely useless for their intended purpose. I don’t understand why BMW designed them this way or why the repair procedure calls for this specific special tool. Generic 3/4” hog ring pliers from Amazon work significantly better, require less effort, and don’t stab holes into the seat cushion. Save your money and use normal hog ring pliers.
