Product Information

A common source of performance issues and CEL's

Mass air flow sensors are tasked with measuring the amount of air entering the engine via the intake. This mass air flow sensor is known as a hot film sensor which will suffer performance deterioration over time. The sensor is designed to be self cleaning. A faulty or non functioning mass air flow sensor will cause a check engine light and in some cases cause a limp mode. The best way to diagnose a faulty mass air flow sensor is to disconnect it and see if engine idle or performance improves.

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

MAF has fixed SES light
This part did not have the BMW logo on the part but the box was from BMW. It got rid of my SES light. I replaced one made in China the prior owner installed.

EML error and lean codes were associated with my bad MAF. This was a clearance item I purchased and ECS had it for 80 dollars more brand new. Installed and EML light went away. improved throttle response and lean codes went away as well. It's a BMW factory part, obviously can't go wrong there.

Question Posted by Angel
Could this be a cause for my p0171 p0174 lean codes and EML light going on after putting my car under high load past 3k rpm’s? I’ve fixed all my vacuum leaks and have no current visible leaks when i smoke test it. Car feels less responsive and idle is not too bad but feels a tad bit rough and low…
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes — a failing or under-reporting MAF sensor can cause P0171/P0174 lean codes, reduced throttle response, rough/low idle, and an EML light under load. Since you’ve already smoke-tested for vacuum leaks, the MAF is a reasonable next item to check, but lean codes under load can also be caused by low fuel pressure/volume, a weak fuel pump, clogged filter/regulator, or intake boot leaks that only open under engine movement.
