Product Information

When the SMG transmission functions correctly in your E60 M5 or E63/E64 M6 it is a pretty good transmission. While it can be harsh to drive around town in certain shift settings/modes it really comes to life under performance driving conditions with lighting quick up shifts. However, the main achilles heal of the SMG transmissions used by BMW in their M cars is usually on the clutch hydraulic end of things. On the SMGIII transmission used for the M5 and M6 the hydraulic unit is the main struggle point. Not only can properly diagnosing issues be difficult but the hydraulic unit itself is extremely expensive to replace (not only just the part but the labor as well if you are paying to have it replaced).

The solution to this problem is to convert the 7 speed SMG car to a regular 6 speed. This kit specifically allows for installation of the more common E9X M3 GS6-53BZ transmission which is essentially bolt in with some reworking of the electronic side of things. Included in this kit are all the hydraulic components needed to replace the SMG parts as well as the required hard parts such as the clutch pedal for converting to a manual transmission car.

FCP Euro does not include items like the shifter or shift linkages because there are several options from OE to performance in which someone may choose differently than what a kit can offer. We have omitted those components to allow the end user to choose what works best for them. Also note this kit is designed for the GS6-53BZ transmission only. You will also need to install a transmission cooler or block off the cooler ports on the transmission to use in the vehicle. Also note this kit does not include a transmission as that will need to be sourced independently. Also does not include flywheel or drive shaft which can be reused or replaced as needed

What flywheel to use? Does the SMG flywheel bolts to e9x m3 clutch?

Unfortunately, we do not have any specific information regarding the additional coding and programming needed to complete the swap. You will have to contact a specialist European shop for more information on this aspect of the swap.

The kit is to covert a smg to a full manual? The transmission number provided in description is already a manual. Shouldn’t the model be for the smg transmission. Does this kit remove smg components from transmission to make it a manual?

This parts kit is intended to replace the 7-speed GS7S47BG SMG transmission with a traditional 6-speed manual. The E9X M3's GS6-53BZ 6-speed manual is a popular option for doing this conversion.

No. Everything has been built around the E9X M3 6 speed box. It is not recommended to use a different variation of the 6 speed because you will lose the oil cooler option and the input shaft is different as well.

As far as the electrical side of things, what do I need to bypass the computer, is there a time for this or an aftermarket module?

Modules (DME, CAS, etc) will need to be programmed to convert everything to a manual. Basics like a clutch neutral safety switch will need to be installed and wired along with the clutch pedal. The mechanical of this are simple, the coding/electronic side we highly recommend be done professionally.
