Product Information

Spark plugs wear out over the course of countless ignition cycles, during which deposits from fuel and oil may accumulate on the electrode. Faulty spark plugs can lead to poor engine performance, evidenced by reduced power, a misfire, and poor fuel economy.

Ignition coils provide the energy required for the spark plug to ignite the fuel mixtures. Over countless of thousands of ignition cycles the ignition coils will wear out. We typically see ignition coil boots wear out causing poor insulation between the spark plug and coil.

Installation tips:

When installing spark plugs on the S55 engine BMW recommends cleaning the spark plug tubes with compressed air before removing the spark plugs first. When removing the spark plugs you must use special tool 12 1 220 (83300495560) with an extension joint. To install the new spark plugs use special tool 12 1 230 (83300496065) to thread the spark plugs into the cylinder head until hand tight. Use special tool 12 1 220 with extension joint and torque spark plugs to 23 ± 3 Nm (~17 ft lbs) of torque. BMW recommends not using graphite or copper grease (anti-seize) when installing new spark plugs.

Ignition Tune-Up Kit

An ignition tune-up kit includes all the parts you need to service your vehicle's ignition system. Components like spark plugs, ignition coils, spark plug connectors, and spark plug wires will eventually require replacement.

When these components are used past their useable service life you will often experience a vehicle that does not run smoothly, suffers from misfires, or even completely dead cylinders due to no spark. Replacing ignition components should be done on a regular interval

Ignition Tune-Up Kit Failure Symptoms
  • Check engine light due to misfire
  • P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308 and other cylinder specific misfire OBD fault codes
  • Hesitation while accelerating
  • Poor fuel economy due to incomplete combustion

Questions & Answers

Question Posted by a customer
Hello, I saw your video on youtube describing the exchange of this Ignition kit on M4. First I want to ask you about the spark plug temperature. You mentioned that NGK is one step colder then the stock spark plugs. I find out that this NGK has number 8 and the origin Bosch M spark plug number is 5. If I understood well it seems that NGK is 3 steps colder than the OEM spark plug. Please can you explain how to read these information/codes? The second question is about the gap. You mentioned that because of the one step colder NGK you have to reduce the gap from 0,8 to 0,56 mm. It meaans that there is some "formula" how to adjust the gap if I use colder spark plugs? or is it the result of your personal experience with S55 engine and the level of tuning which was on this exact car done? Thank you very much for your reply. Richard
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Heat ranges scale differently from different manufacturer, there is no universal scale for heatrange. Gapping spark plugs are always subjective, the gap that is recommended is a generally safe gap to start with on significantly modified vehicles running tunes that require colder plugs; depending on how aggressive the fuel mapping is, the gap may need adjustment further. At the end of the day it comes down to experience as a result of trial/error.
Question Posted by Emily
What is the original gap size?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Pre-gap size: .03" (.762mm) - Pregapped for OE applications
