Product Information

A commonly overlooked replacement item, includes spark plug connector

Direct ignition coils are what generate and transfer power to the spark plug. With high mileage and old age ignition coils can lose their efficiency causing misfiring or poor performance. Generally, worn direct ignition coils can be replaced on a as needed basis. However, we recommend replacing all of your BMW's ignition coils when one has started to misfire or has failed. Replacing all the ignition coils can restore performance and fuel economy to your BMW.

Direct Ignition Coil

Direct ignition coils are located directly over the top of the spark plug. In this ignition setup there is one ignition coil per spark plug and there are no spark plug wires. This ignition setup is often referred to as a coil on plug ignition system.

Coil on plug or direct ignition systems are pretty much used on all modern cars due to packaging, performance, emissions, and maintenance reasons. This ignition system is essentially maintenance free with the exception of spark plug replacements and the occasional coil replacement when compared to a traditional ignition system.

Direct Ignition Coil Failure Symptoms
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Reduced power output
  • Misfires

Good Fitment
Fit my E46 perfectly and was more snug than the stock coils. The build quality of this is solid and weighty even though it uses more ABS than the original part. I found that adjusting one bolt at time then compressing the coil before tightening worked best for installation. The way it fits is a bit different as the mounting holes are slightly thicker than the OEM part, so I could see how some people have issues, but I only replaced one coil, so your mileage may vary. I imagine the rear coils would be a lot more difficult to replace. This Bosch part was made in Slovenia and worked great - it fixed my misfire issue immediately.

Poor fitment
Biggest flaw of the current Bosch coils (Bosch# 0221504029) is the thickness around the mounting holes interfere with the valve cover, leading to only one bolt being usable. This is different from a coil I ordered from this link a couple years ago (Bosch# 0221504004) which has proper fitment. I will need to cut the locating tabs off the valve cover and possibly modify the coils to be able to use both bolt holes.

BMW Direct Ignition Coil - Bosch
Reference to 2001 BMW 3.30Ci. The engine was running rough. Using the scan tool determined that cylinder #6 was misfiring. Swapped cylinder #6 to cylinder #2 and it followed the Ignition coil. Replaced and the misfiring is gone. AutoZone sells the similar coil for almost the same price but I decided to go with FCP for their reputation. Again time will tell.

Poor spring placement in coil boot.
Trying to fix a misfire on an e36 touring I imported. Swapped one coil without improvement and decided just to swap the other 5 (why not, it still had the original coils from 1996). After putting in the other 5, the engine misfired badly on multiple cylinders. After some trouble shooting and inspection, 3 of the 5 coil boots had the spring (it maybe called something else) pushed too far down toward the plug side and was not making contact with the top of the coil. The coil wanting to pop off the plug was the real clue. Pulled off the boot, placed the spring on the coil, reinstalled the coil boot and now they function properly. Unfortunately I still have my other misfire, but not related to the coil.

Bosh Ignition Coil
Not a direct fit. N 52 Engine The case is thick (top portion) by a few millimeters..does not align with bolt holes. I had to sand it down so the holes line up (top left and bottom right.) Be gentle when working and take your time with your classic. I put 35 miles freeway and drove smooth. Combo new ignition coil and spark plugs (BOSH). Have fun with your E46

Some modules have poor spacing -Direct Ignition Coil - Bosch
I purchased the Bosch brand coils this time because I had read that some of the newer Bremi coils had mounting holes which were incorrectly spaced apart. Well, it turns out some of the Bosch brand coils also have this same problem too.

Cabin Air Filter Housing
If you store your car outside, it is imperative to keep your cabin air filter housing installed. It channels the water coming in from the hood "vent" around the engine. If you were like me and didn't know this, you will end up ruining your cylinder #6 ignition coil as it will be completely saturated. Only comment is the shipping parcel they sent the part in was over 1500% bigger than the box the part was in. I thought they had sent me a radiator at first. Thanks again FCP!

Question Posted by Drew
I'm wondering what the difference is between this coil pack and another bosch coil pack part number 00129X6.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
There is no difference, I would recommend purchasing the less expensive one. 00129X6 is not a Bosch part number, it is our in-house part number that consists of a Bosch coil pack set and coil boot set.
Question Posted by ERIC
Is it advisable to mix a Bosch and Bremi? I have Bremi currently, but having cylinder 6 misfire. I want to replace that only then do an overhaul later.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Ideally, you would want coils to be from the same manufacturer but for your application specifically, it's not going to present any problems.
Question Posted by a customer
What’s the difference between this Bosch coil pack and the ones that are included in the kit with 8 (I believe the part number is BOS-1227030081)?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This has been answered in the Q&A: "The only difference between these coils is 1227030081 does not include the spark plug connector. On this ignition coil the spark plug connector is a serviceable item and can be replaced separately. There is no difference with either coil outside of one including the spark plug connector out of the box." To further expand the reason why 0221504029 is not used in the kit is it has a history of being unavailable for long periods of time while 1227030081 does not.
Question Posted by Rafael

Question Posted by a customer
what is the difference between BOS-1227030081 and this? is boot unable to be removed? quality difference?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
