BMW uses gas pressure struts to keep hoods and trunks open for the most part. For one, this is convenient as you can simply open the hood and not have to worry about finding the hood support. However, this little part is often unappreciated until it won't support the weight of the hood anymore. Hood Lift Support

Hood lift supports, or gas struts, are pressurized cylinders designed to hold up a car's hood. Over time, they can fail due to a pressure drop, often caused by exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, or contaminants. Cold weather, in particular, can reduce the gas pressure inside the struts, making them less effective at supporting the hood during cooler conditions.

  • The hood may feel heavier or fail to stay open as high as before due to a gas leak in the lift support
  • Grease or oil leaking from the existing shocks
  • Seeping noise or creaks coming from the shocks when lifting the hood or trunk

hood strut
This hood strut did the job. It has been holding the hood up all week since I'm working on other repairs to get this on the road.

Work like a charm
Replaced my '06 X3 old struts that had completely given out, install was super easy and took about 5 minutes, once you figure out how to take the first one out the second one takes seconds. Would totally recommend for anyone looking for quality reliable struts.

Great fit and easy to install.
Great fit and easy to install. The original BMW hood lift support failed after about 10 years. It's important to replace to avoid head injury when the hood falls while working under the hood, particularly during weather events or extreme outdoor temperatures.

Long overdue
Worked great, fits great, exact fitment, and I think these were the same brand that were installed from the factory. No more hood hitting my noggin when I'm checking fluids. Such an easy DIY part replacement. Can't beat the quality and price for these.
