This Genuine BMW bolt is used for a myriad of vehicle applications however is most commonly used for securing various exhaust components.

Exhaust Bolt

An exhaust system hanger secures the exhaust pipes, mufflers, and other components to the underside of the vehicle, ensuring the system remains properly aligned and prevents excessive movement or vibrations. The hangers are typically made of rubber or rubberized metal components, which provide flexibility and dampen the vibrations from the engine and exhaust system.

Exhaust Bolt Failure Symptoms
  • Excessive Vibration or Noise: A broken or damaged hanger may allow the exhaust system to move excessively, resulting in vibrations that can be felt inside the car, particularly from the floorboard or seats. You might hear clunking or rattling noises, especially when accelerating, going over bumps, or driving on rough roads.
  • Exhaust Pipe Misalignment: The exhaust components may shift or misalign, which can affect the performance of the system and lead to damage over time.

Snapped two of these when torquing the front sway bar link at 25ft/lb, although it may have been my fault, I lowered the car one side at a time before tightening which stressed the bolt.

Trying to solve a damaged thread issue
My underneath cross support bar to the diff needed help (e46 M3) . One of the outer bolt holes didn't have decent thread remaining. The original bolt wouldn't tighten properly. These bolts are same but longer. Worked alright to rectify my problem. I suppose a threaded insert is needed in the chassis to improve the situation better.
