If your X5's tailgate falls freely when you open it you have one or two faulty tailgate struts. The tailgate strut is designed to control the opening of the tailgate and to allow easy access.

BMW X5 E53 tail gate strut
I bought a new set because I thought by 11 years mine are probably worn out. I installed a new set and found out my old ones were perfectly fine. They are just springs inside them. No hydraulics.
