Product Information

The fuel tank sending unit is responsible for measuring the level of fuel in the fuel tank. It does this with a float that moves as the level of the tank changes over time. On most vehicles utilizing a saddle tank, there are two sending units (one on the left and one on the right side) that measure the relative fuel levels. A failed sending unit will cause incorrect fuel level readings.

Fuel Tank Sending Unit

A fuel tank sending unit is a component located inside the fuel tank that measures the amount of fuel remaining and sends this information to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. The sending unit consists of a float, a metal rod, and a variable resistor. As the fuel level changes, the float moves up or down, causing the resistance to vary, which changes the signal sent to the gauge, indicating the fuel level.

Fuel Tank Sending Unit Failure Symptoms
  • Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Readings: A failing sending unit often causes the fuel gauge to show incorrect fuel levels, such as always reading full, empty, or fluctuating unpredictably
  • Stuck Fuel Gauge: If the float or sensor mechanism gets stuck, the fuel gauge may remain in one position, regardless of the actual fuel level
  • Fuel Gauge Reads Empty with Fuel in Tank: A sending unit failure may cause the gauge to read empty, even though there is fuel remaining, leading to unnecessary refueling or inconvenience

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Transfer Pump
My 2010 X5 3.0i (N52) began exhibiting symptoms of an extended cranking period at startup, particularly after sitting overnight. It would take an extra second or two to startup, like a stumble. This is due to the lack of fuel pressure, which can leak down pressure overnight or after sitting for an extended period of time. We let it go for months like this (hey, life is busy) and eventually this autumn, it failed completely. The fuel pressure regulator is built into this transfer pump unit, and its failure was likely the cause of the extended cranking. Replacing this pump resolved the issue and the car has been fine since. Also note, upon replacement of this part, it took 3-4 starting attempts of long cranking and pushing the gas pedal to get the car to start once more. Has been fine without issue for several months. I have a complete DIY guide for replacement of this pump if you search on YouTube.

Car having delay in start
Hi, Sean I have BMW X6 2012 35i model, facing delay start. On average it takes around 3-4 seconds to start the car. BMW dealer suggested to replace the fuel pump as it comes with assembly. Can you suggest if i can try with this cheaper option.

awesome
this product works flawlessly for my 09 bmw x5 e70 3.0 I am glad that it fixed the issue of the engine shut off at 1/4 tank of fuel. It was a factory recall, but the dealer at BMW Norwood was not able to solve the problem after multiple visits. If you encounter a similar issue, please leave a comment, I will try to help.
