If I were to give a list of things a new M54 engine owner should replace, this is at the top. I get asked about this constatly; e46, e39, e53, ANY CHASSIS WITH AN M54!! DO NOT listen to those people who tell you to spray brakeclean into it until it shakes free, they have no idea what they are talking about and they will be doing the same job over and over and over until they finally learn their lesson. LISTEN UP - A NEW ICV HARDLY MAKES ANY NOISE, RATTLING OR OTHERWISE. IF YOUR ICV IS RATTLING EXCESIVELY IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I will repeat- A NEW ICV HARDLY MAKES ANY NOISE, RATTLING OR OTHERWISE. IF YOUR ICV IS RATTLING EXCESIVELY IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. This device regulates your fuel trims on cold starts and is also the "Canary" to your engine. If this is goes bad and you're getting mechanical faults it is MORE THAN LIKELY your intake boot is compromised and needs to be replaced aswell. All elements of the air intake system need to be examined. That is how these go bad. This is a great indicator that you have contaimated your oil and are allowing debris from the intake into your engine scoring your cylinder walls on an engine notorious for piston ring issues. Don't F#!% around with this unless you love to throw eng failsafe/trans failsafe codes every month, love bad compression, or want to be one of those beemer owners with their head up their...
