Product Information

A differential is a mechanical device that is an essential part of most vehicles with four or more wheels, including cars, trucks, and other vehicles with a drivetrain. Its primary function is to allow the wheels on an axle to rotate at different speeds while still receiving power from the engine. This is necessary because when turning, the wheels on the outer side of the curve travel a longer distance than those on the inner side, which causes them to rotate at different speeds.

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Question Posted by David
Has BMW ever upgraded any of the internal parts of this 3.15:1 ratio diff, especially the pinion bearings? Are there any resources indicating what type of bearings are actually used? I have seen references to some combination of single-row angular contact ball bearings, double-row angular contact ball bearings, and tapered roller bearings, but it's often unclear if this exact differential is being referenced. Mine is at ~140k miles and the pinion bearings have lost their preload and are now loose by a few thou (verified at the input flange) and the noise is getting worse fairly quickly. It's had an easy life - no performance mods and relatively sedate driving, plus a BMW fluid change at ~80k, so I'm disappointed by the lack of reliability and a bit skeptical about another factory unit if there are better bearings available.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
BMW does not publish the internal bearing details for this front differential as separately serviceable parts, so I would not be able to confirm whether the pinion bearings were upgraded or whether this exact unit uses angular-contact ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, or a mix of bearing types. This part is supplied as a complete Genuine BMW exchange front differential assembly, not as a rebuild kit. If your current unit has measurable input-flange play and worsening noise, replacement of the complete differential is the safest option unless you are working with a differential rebuilder who can identify and set up the correct bearings, preload, backlash, and contact pattern.
