a necessity
these are stretch bolts that need to be replaced when changing valve cover gasket on newer BMW engines.

They are E Torx, and could very well be E12. If you're asking because you plan to purchase a single socket, it might be a better idea to buy a small set of E Torx sockets instead just in case (such as "Lisle 26280").

No, aluminum. Which is required for early N52's with magnesium valve covers.

Please make sure you have an earlier production N52 with a magnesium valve cover before ordering since your question referencing pulling bolts out of the cover seems to be referencing the later style plastic valve cover with encapsulated mounting bolts. You do not need to do this with earlier style engines with magnesium valve covers. If your vehicle has a plastic valve cover (later production) you do not need to replace the valve cover bolts. The three longer bolts are used in the center holes (spark plug recess) on the valve cover.
