Should be replaced every 4 years, 50,000 miles
Your BMW's timing belt is responsible for timing the valve train to the crankshaft. Timing belts can stretch out and fray due to constant heating a cooling cycles as well as constant tension. We recommend replacing this belt along with the tensioner every 4 years or 50,000 miles for the best service life and performance. This is important because the M20 engine is an interference engine. Failure of this belt will likely destroy the cylinder head and cause severe damage to the engine.
Your engines timing belt synchronizes the valve train to the rotation of the engines crankshaft. It is imperative to replace your timing belt at the manufacturer specified intervals to prevent catastrophic engine failure. This is especially critical on interference engines as the engine valves and pistons will collide in the event of a timing belt failure.

Good fit
Worked on a BMW E28 528E
Fit almost to tight, maybe that's just me. Had to redo a water pump after just a few months with many, many highway miles. Would almost just reinstall, if you know, it wasn't a timing belt on a classic. Hint: make sure your fan blades, fan clutch, and alt belt/mount are all in good shape to not have to revisit installing a new belt and pump.
