Product Information

Oil filter housing gasket leaks are a major issue on BMW's N5X family of engines. Outside of making a mess of the engine, it can also lead to a majorly expensive repair if the issue is not addressed. It is known that oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket can cause the serpentine belt to swell and slip off the crank pulley. Because of the design of the crank pulley, the belt can only slip off behind the pulley between the engine block. If this happens the belt will be shredded and forced through the front crank seal. This is a preventable problem by repairing an oil filter housing leak.

The seal that causes this problem, to begin with, is a soft rubber seal that sits in the filter housing and seals it to the cylinder head. Over time this seal becomes brittle and shrinks losing its ability to make a leak-free seal. This, in turn, allows oil to leak down the side of the engine. Bad oil filter housing leaks can cause a lot of issues later on if not addressed as soon as possible. FCP Euro recommends inspecting the oil filter housing and general cleanliness of the engine bay on a regular basis.

Please note: Oil filter housing bolts to cylinder head should be torqued to 22Nm (~16 ft lbs) and the oil cooler to oil filter housing bolts should be torqued to 16Nm (~12 ft lbs). The rearward oil filter housing bolt can only be removed using a universal E10 e torx socket (CTA-2476). The replacement alternator mounting bolts are included in order to make room for removal of the oil filter housing as well as clean up oil that has collected behind and under the alternator. These aluminum mounting bolts are torqued to 10Nm (~7 ft lbs) + 180°.

Good kit, but one high cost bolt and 4 extra bolts
It fit my 2007 X3 fine. Note that one bolt was more than $20! I should have used the old one. Also it came with new 4 alternator bolts that are not used for this job. $10 not needed.

Oil cooler housing screws
Unfortunately, I have to give this kit 4 stars due to the original screws for the oil coolant housing not being included. The oil coolant housing and oil filter housing gaskets kit with new bolts included was good. However the new oil coolant housing bolts are made differently than the original causing the protective cover for the oil coolant housing to not fit snugly. A solution would be to provide the exact replacement bolts as the originals. Everything else was fine.

What is High speed synchronisation (S840A)? I have a 2008 X3 (E83) 3.0Si with N52 engine. How to determine if this is the correct kit. And, are alternator bolts needed for this DIY. Please advise. Thanks!

High speed synchronisation (S840A) is for models with an external oil cooler and oil cooler thermostat. If you are unsure of what you have please email your VIN to service@fcpeuro.com. Yes, alternator bolts are required replacements for this job since the alternator bolts are one-time use only and need to be removed to gain further access to the oil filter housing.
