Product Information

Over time the OEM couplers become hardened, brittle, deformed, and leak due to the rubber used in the product. BMW looked at these as worn items and replaceable. That is where we at NRW Design felt we could improve on both the S65 couplers and the S85 couplers. Using synthetic silicone rubber we were able to replicate the stock coupler but improved on its chemical makeup. Our silicone couplers can handle high temperatures as well as low temperatures without compromising the structural integrity of the material. This allows our couplers to last a true lifetime and not just the "lifetime" BMW uses to sell products. Each set comes with its respective worm clamp and the S65 set is sold with 8 couplers and 8 clamps whereas the S85 comes with 10 couplers and its respective 10 clamps. The clamps are a replacement for the bottom clamp that is a 1-time use. Your top worm clamp is reusable and will fit our couplers perfectly. Our silicone couplers are boost-approved and have been tested on both NA and SC cars.

Engine Intake Manifold Gasket

An engine intake manifold gasket seals the intake manifold to the cylinder head. Its primary job is to ensure that all metered air that has been taken in through the air intake system is delivered to the engine without any air being lost through a leak at the manifold to the cylinder head connection. It also keeps any unmetered air, dirt, and debris from entering the intake manifold to the cylinder head connection.

On older vehicles and engines, these are usually flat gaskets made of paper or similar composite materials, or may occasionally be a multi-layer metal gasket. On newer vehicles, they are often made of rubber or similar elastomer materials. An engine intake manifold gasket may be a single-piece part that will seal all of the intake runners to the cylinder head or a singular gasket that is used multiple times on a per-cylinder basis. The color, shape, and materials can vary depending on the brand, manufacturer, and application, but are often orange and orange/brown, or green.

It is common practice to replace the engine intake manifold gasket any time that you have the intake manifold removed from the cylinder head. This ensures that when you assemble the intake system, it is free of leaks or other issues. This is especially important on turbocharged or supercharged engines that have positive manifold pressures above the atmospheric pressure.

Engine Intake Manifold Gasket Failure Symptoms
  • Air leaks: Over time, your intake manifold gasket will degrade because of heat, vibration, and exposure to oils and other solvents. Paper or composite gaskets can begin to break down and chunk apart. Rubber gaskets can become hard and brittle. This can let dirt and debris in but is more likely to cause an air intake flow fault or CEL.
  • Swelling / Damage from external sources: Cleaners, solvents, and other chemicals such as brake clean can cause rubber and other elastomers to swell and cause issues.
  • Loss of elasticity: Eventually the rubber or material will harden and lose its elasticity, eventually becoming brittle and easily damaged. These gaskets will appear completely flat and will not reseal at all if they are reused.
  • Check Engine Light: Excessive unmetered air from a bad intake manifold gasket can result in a CEL for an air intake leak fault or other airflow-related diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Misfire: A severe air intake leak can cause rough running and an engine misfire.
  • Oil residue: Because the positive crankcase ventilation system feeds air that may oil vapor into the intake to be burned during combustion, it is common for a bad or failed intake manifold gasket to result in oil residue on or around the intake manifold.

About NRW Design

As in life, everything starts like… A Pilot (N), an Engineer (R) and a Master Mechanic (W) walk into a bar …

This time though it was not a joke but an amazing friendship that formed. A friendship that all had a common goal. The betterment and improvement of what we drive. The best part is we all come from different circles of life and bring different things to the table, all capitalizing and improving the ideas of the others. Each of our talents exemplifies the other allowing us to be able to analyze an issue and be able to solve the problem at hand with a solution.

Having access to CMM machines 4-axis mills and lathes as well as metal cutters, benders, and any tool needed to design and manufacture the ideas allows us to be able to analyze design and construct what could be impossible to many.

We are all BMW enthusiasts and are designing products for other BMW enthusiasts. We are using our talents to help create solutions to issues we see in our industry.

Our goal is to provide product design and engineering that meets the standards of the pilot, makes the life of a master mechanic easier, and is approved by the engineer.

Quality control issues- undersized clamps
I bought this supposedly superior NRW Design silicone gasket set to replace three failing factory gaskets on my BMW S85 V10. While I don’t mind paying a premium for quality, this expensive kit has two major flaws. First, there is a quality control issue: one of the ten gaskets was noticeably softer and less rigid than the other nine. Second, the included replacement hose clamps are completely undersized. NRW supplies 52–76mm clamps, but the factory S85 clamps are 78–83.5mm. This discrepancy makes installation incredibly frustrating. You have to open the clamps completely to force them on, and because there is zero slack, re-threading the worm gear while working in a tight space is an absolute nightmare. I contacted the vendor directly, but they dismissed my complaints. I don't blame FCP Euro for this manufacturing oversight, but I highly recommend their team tests this kit to verify these fitment issues. Buyers should be prepared to source their own correctly sized clamps.
