Product Information

The EGR valve controls the flow of exhaust gases to the intake manifold and is responsible for helping control fuel consumption and reduce emissions under certain operating conditions. The EGR valve is closed unless otherwise commanded open. EGR valves are especially important on smaller displacement GDI engines by reducing pumping losses of the engine which otherwise may not be as efficient without the EGR system.

EGR valves will experience wear and tear over time due to the environment in which they operate. The main causes cause of failure is caron buildup from the exhaust gases along the EGR and intake system passages. Over time this will clog tubes, exhaust gas channels, and eventually the EGR valve itself. This will restrict flow but more commonly it will cause the EGR valve to stick in an open or closed position.

A failed EGR valve will cause a check engine light and engine performance issues. An open valve will affect air-fuel ratio which will result in reduced power and fuel efficiency. A valve that is stuck closed will cause high combustion chamber temperatures resulting in increases emissions. High combustion chamber temperatures due to a stuck closed EGR valve can also causes engine knock (pre-ignition) which can severely damage an engine.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve

An Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is an emissions control component that recirculates a portion of the engine’s exhaust gases back into the intake manifold. By mixing exhaust with the air-fuel charge, it lowers combustion temperatures, reducing the formation of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) and improving efficiency under certain conditions. Modern vehicles may use electronically controlled EGR valves for precise operation.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Failure Symptoms
  • Rough idle or stalling, caused by the valve sticking open and letting in too much exhaust.
  • Poor performance or hesitation, often from a clogged or stuck-closed valve restricting proper gas flow.
  • Check Engine Light (CEL) with related fault codes (e.g., P0401 “EGR flow insufficient” or P0402 “excessive EGR flow”).

Will Not Work for F30 328d!!!
You MUST buy the OEM BMW EGR valve for the 328d. If you buy this, you'll have stumbling issues on cold starts that can be pretty violently jerky. This will be accompanied by various (4, in my case) fault codes. These keep coming back and there seems to be no solution besides swapping in an OEM EGR. For more details, search "Solution for 255B00 fault code" on the Bimmerfest Forum. Multiple people on the forum describe these exact issues with this exact EGR. Despite Borg Warner being the manufacturer of the OEM EGR and being all the same part numbers, the Whaler/BMW one is, in fact, different from this one and much higher quality. TL:DR, Buy the BMW brand one, not this. Buy once, cry once.

China,710327d/1 not 710327d
It's the worst. This is a 710327d/1 from China. Don't fall for the picture. I won't buy anything here again.

Fixed my faulty egr problem
This part was a perfect replacement. Fixed my egr fault problem right away. My only complaint is after adding to my cart the website suggested that I also buy the $6 gasket along with it. I added the gasket to the cart and the egr valve ended up coming with it's own gasket. Now I have an extra $6 oring.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Lee
Hello. Is this the same product as the picture? Or is it 710327D/1? I wonder if the product design in the spindle/shaft is the same as the genuine part.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Borg recently rejuvenated availability for this part, and may have improved the design with the newer version in some way. When we get these new ones in we can get updated photos to reflect any changes.
Question Posted by Kris
Do I need to order a gasket to go with the valve?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
It will include the gasket, no need to order separately.
