Product Information

Drive Shaft

A driveshaft is a rotating metal shaft that transmits power from the transmission to the rear wheels in a vehicle, and signs of a failing driveshaft include: noticeable vibrations while driving, shuddering when accelerating, loud clicking or clunking noises, squeaking sounds, and difficulty turning, often accompanied by shaking coming from underneath the car; all of which are usually caused by worn-out U-joints or center bearing issues within the driveshaft assembly.

Drive Shaft Failure Symptoms
  • Vibrations: This is the most common sign of a failing driveshaft, often felt as a shaking sensation while driving, especially at higher speeds
  • Shuddering upon acceleration: When accelerating from a stop, the car may jerk or shudder due to a damaged driveshaft struggling to deliver smooth power
  • Noises: Clicking, clunking, squeaking, or rattling sounds coming from the drivetrain area can indicate worn components within the driveshaft

Aftermarket junk
Like most E36 owners my original 27-year-old drive shaft u joints were worn out and had play. I Figured it was a good idea to have replaceable U joints like this aftermarket unit. Previously I had ordered an "upgraded" drive shaft (from a different company) with Spicer 1310 u joints (much stronger than stock). The driveshaft looked great. However, it had a bad vibration at highway speeds. Turns out, the shaft tubes were welded off axis by more than 0.017" (checked with a dial indicator). I sent it back for another one (TWICE). I even tried balancing one of them. Both new upgraded driveshafts had more than 0.017" runout and I retuned both and got my money back. I then figured that FCP Euro would have better vetted aftermarket suppliers, and this "Powertrain" brand would be okay. Apon receiving this Powertrain unit, it looked great, however completely identical in construction to the "upgraded" 1310 joint unit from the other company. I installed it anyway..... IT HAD 0.018" RUNOUT and vibrated like hell on the highway. I sent this one back to FCP for a refund and bought the more expensive BMW part which fixed my issue. Drives smooth on the highway and much less runout (within spec) Moral of the story is, only buy original BMW parts! FYI the BMW part was made in 2024, crazy that BMW is still making parts for these cars. FCP staff if you read this, I think there is one aftermarket supplier that's making theses driveshafts for E36s and other BMW models and they don't know what they are doing. Other parts sites are getting these driveshafts from the same place and they are all wrong. Maybe call the supplier and tell them their welding machine isn't right and is making useless parts? Hope this helps someone. Thanks
