Drive Shaft

A driveshaft is a rotating metal shaft that transmits power from the transmission to the rear wheels in a vehicle, and signs of a failing driveshaft include: noticeable vibrations while driving, shuddering when accelerating, loud clicking or clunking noises, squeaking sounds, and difficulty turning, often accompanied by shaking coming from underneath the car; all of which are usually caused by worn-out U-joints or center bearing issues within the driveshaft assembly.

Drive Shaft Failure Symptoms
  • Vibrations: This is the most common sign of a failing driveshaft, often felt as a shaking sensation while driving, especially at higher speeds
  • Shuddering upon acceleration: When accelerating from a stop, the car may jerk or shudder due to a damaged driveshaft struggling to deliver smooth power
  • Noises: Clicking, clunking, squeaking, or rattling sounds coming from the drivetrain area can indicate worn components within the driveshaft

Significant drop in quality from OE
I bought this driveshaft to save $800 over the Genuine BMW replacement and there is a significant drop in quality. The u-joints were not aligned properly, about 3-5 degrees out of phase. The driveshaft received was not fully painted like the pictures. The yokes and welds to the tube were exposed steel that will rust over time. After install there was a terrible vibration at speeds over 50mph. This was returned and replaced with the Genuine BMW driveshaft.
