Your vehicle's CV axle is a crucial component of its drivetrain/axle that transfers power from the transmission to the wheels. Over thousands of miles, various road and weather conditions, axle boots can tear or simply stretch and wear. If a tear occurs in a boot, the grease will leak out allowing contaminants to get into the joint. If caught soon enough, you can reboot the axle and preserve it. However, if a torn boot is ignored, an axle replacement will eventually be needed. This is usually indicated by drivetrain vibrations under acceleration and clicking coming from the CV joints.

CV Axle Assembly

The CV (Constant Velocity) axle assembly is responsible for transferring torque and rotational power from the transmission to the wheels while allowing for suspension movement and steering articulation. The CV axle consists of a shaft with joints at both ends: a CV joint that connects the axle to the transmission and another CV joint that connects the axle to the wheel hub. This design allows the axle to handle changes in angle and length as the vehicle moves, especially when turning or going over bumps.

CV Axle Assembly Failure Symptoms
  • Clicking or Popping Noises: One of the most common signs of a failing CV axle is a clicking or popping noise when turning the vehicle. This noise typically occurs when the CV joint is damaged or worn out, especially during sharp turns.
  • Vibration While Driving: A failing CV axle can cause noticeable vibrations while driving, especially at higher speeds. This vibration may indicate that the axle is bent, or damaged, or that the CV joints are worn out.
  • Grease Leaks: If the CV axle boot tears or cracks, grease can leak out. You may notice grease on the inside of the wheel or around the CV joint. This can lead to increased wear on the joint due to a lack of lubrication.

I ordered this part . This does not fit a 2000 e53 x5 4.4 m62 . What a massive job to remove old cv axle and install new cv that did not fit. Removing new and installing original again that does fit. The shaft side going in to the wheel hub is to big and does not fit into wheel hub. The correct dimensions is between 59 mm and 60mm as my original part. This unit measures around 62mm + .How do I order the correct part from FCP and have confidence that the new order will fit ? How does this process work ? Ship back and refund at least ? For me this is a very expensive and time-consuming process not getting the correct part. I don't understand how this went wrong ?
