Product Information

The S65 engine features hydraulic tensioners which are ideal for high RPM engine operation. Compared to mechanical tensioners, hydraulic-style tensioners typically offer a longer service life with much better performance during high RPM operating and quick RPM changes. This is ideal for the S65 engine.

This kit includes an INA pulley that replaces the tensioner pulley without replacing the entire tension arm. Later production E9X M3’s use p/n 11287841527 as the tensioner arm on the power steering and AC compressor side. It uses a pulley marked F-553814.03-0300 which is sold on its own as INA 5320557100 which cross-references to a VAG idler pulley (OE# 95510211921 / 059903341H). Instead of replacing the entire tensioner pulley assembly (pulley + cast lever arm the hydraulic damper attached to), you can just replace the pulley which is a massive cost saving.

Please note: Serpentine belt routing on the AC compressor/power steering side (blue) varies based on the power steering pump installed. The production date changeover was 5/15/2008 when the anticlockwise rotating power steering pump became standard equipment. Use the diagram below as a reference for proper belt routing on this system and identifying the style of pump installed. All post 5/15/2008 cars should have the anti-clockwise spinning power steering pump:

Accessory Drive Belt Kit

An accessory drive belt, also referred to as a serpentine belt, functions by transferring power from the engine crankshaft to various accessories like the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. Essentially driving these rotating assembles through a series of pulleys with the belt's rotation. It is important to check the belt for cracks, fraying, or excessive wear during routine maintenance, keeping in mind most manufacturers recommend replacing the accessory drive belt at specified mileage intervals, typically between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Proper tensioning of the belt is also crucial, so while servicing or inspecting an accessory drive belt, it is important to also inspect the belt tensioner and supporting idler pulleys.

Accessory Drive Belt Kit Failure Symptoms
  • Wear and tear: Over time, the belt can become cracked, frayed, or glazed, causing it to slip on the pulleys.
  • Misalignment: If pulleys are not properly aligned, the belt can rub against them unevenly, causing wear and noise.
  • Tension issues: Incorrect belt tension can lead to slipping or excessive strain on the belt and its components.
  • Contamination: Engine oil, coolant, or debris can degrade the belt material
  • Excessive Noise: Squealing noise, especially when starting the engine
