Product Information

It's hard to think that your CV axle is a complicated piece of equipment. When you think about it, a CV axle needs to be able to adapt to a wide range of motion between suspension movements and steering inputs while still transmitting power to the wheel. Over thousands of miles, various road and weather conditions, and time axle boots can tear or simply stretch and wear. If a tear occurs in a boot, the grease will leak out allowing for water and dirt to get into the joint. If caught soon enough, you can reboot the axle. However, if it is ignored an axle replacement will be needed. This is usually indicated by drive train vibrations under acceleration and clicking coming from the CV joints.

CV Axle Shaft

A CV (Constant Velocity) axle shaft is a key drivetrain component that transfers power from the transmission or differential to the wheels while accommodating steering angles and suspension movement. It uses CV joints at both ends to deliver smooth, consistent torque, even during turns or over uneven road surfaces. A healthy CV axle ensures efficient power delivery, stable handling, and reduced drivetrain vibration.

CV Axle Shaft Failure Symptoms
  • Clicking or popping noises when turning, often from worn CV joints.
  • Grease leakage around the CV boot, indicating a torn or damaged boot.
  • Excessive vibration during acceleration, caused by a failing or imbalanced axle shaft.

ABS, Brake, 4x4, Airbag, Check Engine Lights
Had the unholy pentad of dashboard lights listed in this review's subject line. The previous CV Axle's tone ring had a rust intrusion which crept underneath the ring, causing it to expand in that area and scrape against the inside of the wheel hub and potentially the sensor too. This affected the ring and/or sensor enough that the wheel speed data in that corner was highly inconsistent (as verified by live graphing of wheel speed data on a scan tool). The new axle with its fresh tone ring caused all my dash lights to go away and graphing the live data showed the previously bad wheel speed data completely resolved and consistent with a known working wheel speed sensor. Thank you to the FCP Euro tech team for helping validate this as a likely solution to my problem!

GKN rear axle -2009 E83
I replaced right rear speed sensor to fix abs error and didn’t clear. The axle abs ring was corroded so I replaced the axle and bearing while I was there and fixed error. Worked perfect on 2009 E83 and not too difficult to install. BMW dealership wanted $1500+ to fix and I did it myself for less than $300. Plus, these axles are super hard to find elsewhere and everyone has them on back order. Glad I found it here to get my old but good BMW back on the road for my kids at low cost. If you’re ok with turning wrenches, this is the site for you to save major $$$$$$ over dealership costs.
