Product Information

The engine crank shaft position sensor tells the car's computer the position of the crankshaft in its rotation for the purposes of things like firing spark and adjusting valve timing (if applicable). An indication of a faulty sensor might include failure to start or poor performance.

Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor

The engine crankshaft position sensor monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft, providing information to the engine control unit (ECU). The sensor ensures proper timing for fuel injection, ignition, and other key engine functions. Without accurate crankshaft data, the ECU can't adequately time the spark or fuel, causing poor performance or even preventing the engine from running. Crankshaft position sensors come in different designs, with magnetic or Hall-effect sensors being the most common. The magnetic sensor consists of a coil and magnet that generates a signal as the engine rotates, while the Hall-effect sensor uses a semiconductor to detect changes in the magnetic field.

The crankshaft position sensor is usually located near the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer, or flywheel/transmission depending on the engine’s design. It works by detecting notches or teeth on a component called a reluctor or tone wheel, creating a signal that the ECU can interpret. When this sensor fails, common symptoms include engine stalling, rough idling, misfires, or the engine not starting at all. One of the most frequent failure modes is internal short-circuiting due to heat and vibration over time. Contaminants like oil, dirt, or metal shavings can also interfere with its ability to detect the crankshaft's position.

Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure Symptoms
  • No Start Condition: The CPS gives the information to the ECU that the engine is showing positive RPM and is ready to start. If the computer does not get a signal from the sensor, or the sensor is outputting values that it is not anticipating, the engine won’t start.
  • Stalling when warm: Once the engine warms up, a failing crankshaft position sensor can often cause stalling when coming to a stop because the engine doesn’t have the right information to maintain a stable idle.
  • Dead or erratic tachometer: Some older vehicles may run the tachometer off of the output from the crankshaft sensor. If the tach is behaving strangely, especially in conjunction with other running problems, the CPS could be at fault.
  • P0335: If the integrity of the internal wiring has failed, you may get a P0335, however it is not a guarantee that a vehicle with a failing CPS will have a check engine light.
  • Poor performance at certain RPMs: A failing crankshaft position sensor can cause issues with engine performance, especially if at a certain point in the rpm range the sensor can’t send an in-range signal to the ECU with may cause timing to drift. Failing crank position sensors more commonly cause running issues at higher RPMs and idle.
  • Misfires across multiple cylinders: If the engine is struggling to time fuel and spark, you may encounter misfires across all cylinders at once. This is in contrast to the failure of a coil or fuel injector, which may only effect one cylinder at a time.

Genuine BMW only
Ignore the most recent nonsense review, as that person is uneducated. None of these aftermarket critical Sensors are better than Genuine BMW. Genuine BMW very rarely fail prematurely or are defective out of the box. This Sensor will Discontinue soon, so grab it while it's available.

Better than oem
Bought one of these in 2023 when my original one failed at 260k. Worked fine but bought a genuine one in October 2025 to have some peace of mind (incase this aftermarket one fails). Genuine one failed in June 2026. Somehow this for me was better than genuine and put it back in.

**BEWARE!!! DO NOT BUY THIS SENSOR.**
This sensor was a complete waste of time and money. I live in South Texas where summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, and this sensor consistently failed once it got hot. On sunny days my car would bog down, stall, and completely shut off, leaving me stranded in the middle of traffic. After it cooled down, it would often start again, making diagnosis even more frustrating.

Low quality, poor performing, unreliable sensors
These sensors are junk. I have now had two die on me within a couple heat cycles each, with ohm readings way out of range after just leaving the sensor in the sun to test. We put them on a scope and they would sometimes completely miss a tooth of the trigger wheel. The sensors will start to throw crank position errors and your engine will crank-no-start until the sensor has cooled down to ambient. Buy a Genuine BMW crank sensor instead, your car reliably starting and running is worth the extra money.

I was wrong
I posted a review on these before and I can't edit them so I'm updating with this post. I was wrong about the sensors. Even though they test-out weird with the Ohms, they do actually truly work. For me, both of my cars had bad fuel pumps and once I got that sorted they came back to life, so I was just simply wrong about this sensor, and it takes a man to admit his mistakes so here I am just doing the thing. Good option at a good price

Bad sensors, waste of time and money
I've tested these out, two brand new out of the box do not work correctly. They simply do not work. They can make you think your fuel pump is bad and cause you to spend over $300 replacing the pump just to find out that this sensor is keeping the car from starting. I had a terrible experience with support and I can't get a good sensor sourced from FCP. For all this wasted time and effort, they only offered a 5% discount on the oem sensor. So disappointed.

Affordable Sensor
Made in China now. The old Hella ones were NOS OE ones made in Germany. But alas these will work.

Not made in Spain, not made in Germany, but made in China. It works though, for now.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Eduardo
Now that the sensor is in stock, can you please clarify the resistive value of it? Thank you
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
We do not have this sensor on hand to test it. Genuine BMW crank sensor measures 514 ohms for reference.
Question Posted by Eduardo
What are the resistance values for this sensor? I have one, bought new about 2 years ago but according to the "revised Bentley Manual" the resistance value should be 540 ohms but in real life what does this HELLA sensor show? Mine, made in Spain, plastic housing, has between PIN 1 and 2 920 ohms
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
We do not have this sensor in stock to test it. The Genuine BMW crank sensor measures 514 ohms for reference.
