Product Information

Comprehensive rear control arm service kit designed to replace worn rear control arms, wheel carrier ball joint, and integral link on E39 models, fits vehicles up to 12/2001

This control arm kit is a basic rear suspension service kit that replaces the upper rear control arms on your E39 5-series. These components play a huge roll in the rear suspension in terms of alignment and maintaining proper suspension geometry. This kit has been designed around all Lemforder components which are identical to what is used in the factory to build your BMW as well as the same parts used by the dealership network to service your BMW with.

Worn rear control arms can cause a variety of issues including excessive bum steer and inner tire wear. We recommend replacing all of your components if you have in excess of 80K miles and still have original components. We also encourage that you replace your control arm components if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Popping, clunking, or clicking sounds while traveling over bumps or dips in the road
  • A disconnected feeling between the steering wheel and front end of the car
  • Vehicle is slow to respond to steering inputs
  • Vehicle wanders on the highway or will not drive straight
  • Vehicle cannot be aligned properly due to play in the rear suspension
Suspension Control Arm Kit

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed.

Suspension Control Arm Kit Failure Symptoms
  • Play in suspension joints where these arms meet the subframe and/or knuckle
  • Buckling noise emanating from the suspension
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Inability to properly align vehicle
  • Shutter or vibration coming from the steering wheel at highway speed
  • Wandering or pulling sensation from side to side felt on the steering wheel

Love this set.
I've got this kit and installed it over two years ago. Everything is still tight and the car rides great. No issues with getting alignments. You will absolutely need the ball joint press specific to this model. It is a bear to get out and in (I think that tool is about 60 bucks).

Lemforder Control Arms
The recess on the Lemforder Control Arm(s) do not exactly match OEM arms so the plastic bracket for holding the ABS sensor line do not fit as OEM designed (changing the free play to offset suspension travel). Tie wraps help but Lemforder should have researched specifications more precisely. Not FCP Euro's fault, so only four stars. Otherwise the Kit will rebuild both sides of your e39 rear suspension just fine.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
Can this kit be purchased without the sway bar links?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
No. This kit is set up as is. You can add the individual items into a cart however as they are linked in the kit contents section in the description.
Question Posted by a customer
What are the differences between this kit and #KIT-E39REARKITLLAT? Do the later parts have better bushings, or vice-versa? What would you recommend for someone doing a complete rear suspension overhaul?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
There is no difference in bushing material for the post 12/2001 control arm kit. The only difference is a ball joint seat change on the wheel carrier which requires a different guide rod. Other than that all other control arms are identical. The guide rod for pre 12/2001 cars will not fit post 12/2011 cars unless the wheel carrier is exchanged for a later model version. That is why there is a production date split for the control arm kit.
