How to Replace your BMW Control Arm, Bushings & Ball Joint (Video)

We're here with Zach Miller to show you how to replace the control arm, bushings and ball joint on an E46 BMW. Don't hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions 1-877-634-0063

Suspension Control Arm and Ball Joint Assembly

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed:

Suspension Control Arm and Ball Joint Assembly Failure Symptoms
  • Play in suspension joints where these arms meet the subframe and/or knuckle
  • Buckling noise emanating from the suspension
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Inability to properly align vehicle
  • Shutter or vibration coming from the steering wheel at highway speed
  • Wandering or pulling sensation from side to side felt on the steering wheel

Nice but they have a boot clamp flaw
Yes, same as what was on the car with just the Roundel & M cast logos ground off. HOWEVER, why do the blue clamp rings on the inner boots pop out of place on the L & R boots after only 2 weeks of driving around?? Leaving the boot open with the grease coming out & dirt getting in. It's very concerning. I was able to re-install these clamps but the Big question is: why did they pop off? Customer Service says that they didn't get damaged so no offer to swap them was given to me. This is not an easy area of the car to "keep an eye on it" So the whole situation is super annoying. Note: this weird phenomena never happened with the original control arms on the car from the factory!

This arm is identical to the original factory part; no issues with fitment other than the usual that come with installing M3 control arms. Note that this part includes the following : BMW Strut Lock Nut (M14x1.5mm) - Genuine BMW 31106774714 BMW Self-Locking Collar Nut (M12X15 Zns3) - Genuine BMW 31106777806

WOW
What a huge difference. Probably the most notable upgrade I've done for suspension yet. My car has over 135k and im sure it was sitting on stock arms. Highly recommended.

Direct replacement for E46 M3's. Identical to the ones I removed in every way.
