Product Information

Also known as a throw out bearing, a common replacement when installing a new clutch

The clutch release bearing is housed within your BMW's transmission bell housing. It sits and is located on a "guide tube" which surrounds the input shaft of the transmission. When you push the clutch pedal down; the slave cylinder forces the shift fork to push the release bearing into the pressure plate. This action allows for you to shift with the transmission disengaged.

It is a common and recommended practice to replace this component when installing a new clutch. However, it is possible for the release bearing to fail before the clutch needs replacement. If you hear a whining or squealing noise when the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor as you are shifting it typically means the release bearing has gone bad and needs to be replaced.

Please note that this is a self aligning release bearing. If the center section looks off center in relation to the release bearing simply install as is. The release bearing will self center itself on the first clutch engagement.

Clutch Release Bearing

A clutch release bearing also known as a throw-out bearing is an essential part of a manual transmission’s clutch system. It enables the smooth engagement and disengagement of the clutch by allowing the clutch pedal’s force to be transferred to the clutch pressure plate. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the release bearing pushes against the pressure plate, disengaging the clutch and allowing you to shift gears.

Clutch Release Bearing Failure Symptoms
  • Clutch Slippage: In severe cases, a failing release bearing can contribute to clutch slippage, where the clutch does not fully engage, causing a loss of power transmission and difficulty accelerating
  • Difficulty Shifting Gears: If the bearing is worn, it may not fully disengage the clutch, making it harder to shift gears smoothly and increasing the likelihood of grinding between gears
  • Noises When Depressing the Clutch Pedal: A failing release bearing often produces squealing, chirping, or grinding noises when the clutch pedal is pressed. These sounds may reduce or disappear when the pedal is released

Bad Bearing
Didn't even install this, noticed it was off center and nothing fit very well, against the clutch fork, against the input shaft, i know it would rattle. on top of that I spun the bearing by hand and it clicks. no other way of describing it other than its an old man's knees when hes getting up. no way id use this. shit is for fags

Fits OK
Looks pretty good but the center sleeve is slightly off center. I don't know if this will be a big deal or not, probably won't know for years if it is side loading on the guide sleeve. Otherwise looks good.
