Product Information

OEM replacement dual mass flywheel, acts as a mounting point for the pressure plate

A flywheel serves two important functions. Firstly, the flywheel is a rotating mechanical device that stores rotational energy. It helps maintain engine rotation in between ignition cycles. Secondly, the flywheel is the friction surface for the clutch disc and a mounting point for the pressure plate.

A dual mass flywheel is a special flywheel that has an inner and outer mass. The inner mass is coupled to the engines mass moment of inertia while the outer mass is coupled to the transmissions moment of inertia. The inner and outer mas are lined by a spring/damping system which reduces drive train vibration and allows for smooth clutch engagement and disengagement.

As a dual mass flywheel ages it can develop an issue with the damping system which can cause severe vibrations. For this reason FCP recommends replacing your dual mass flywheels with every clutch service.

Clutch Flywheel

A clutch flywheel is a heavy, circular metal disc (usually made of steel or cast iron) mounted on the rear of the engine’s crankshaft in manual transmission vehicles. It plays a key role in both engine operation and clutch engagement.

Clutch Flywheel Failure Symptoms
  • Clutch slippage or poor engagement – worn or damaged flywheel surface reduces grip.
  • Vibrations or shuddering – felt when engaging the clutch due to hot spots, warping, or cracks.
  • Difficulty starting the engine – damaged flywheel teeth prevent the starter motor from engaging properly.

BMW Dual Mass Flywheel
Another great OE part at a fraction of the cost of the BMW part for the same exact part.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Manuel
I have the DKM ma-006-054 clutch kit installed, but don’t like the chatter. Can I use this flywheel with DKM pressure plate and clutch disc without any problems? Thanks, Manny
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The short answer is no. Long answer is two-fold: (1) it's almost guaranteed the DKM pressure plate will not fit the factory dual mass flywheel. (2) You can't use a hub spring clutch on a dual-mass flywheel because you will then have two sprung clutch components which create a lot of elasticity in the drive train. When converting from a dual-mass flywheel to a solid flywheel it is guaranteed that you will hear gearbox rattle at idle because you no longer have the dual mass flywheel acting as a vibration damper for the engine. Sometimes changing the gear oil can reduce this problem. Particularly on the Getrag 420G transmisison used on the E46 M3 changing from MTF LT 2 or equivalent to ATF can help cut down on gear box rattle as well.
