This brake booster check valve is located on the brake booster and allows air to enter/exit in one direction only. This check valve provides the air for the brake booster to provide extra braking assist. If this check valve fails the brake booster will not function properly when the brake pedal is depressed.

Not noted to fit a 1972 BMW 2002 , but seems it should work?

No, I would not use this Vaico 34331156703 / 34331156579 check valve for a 1972 BMW 2002. The 1972 BMW 2002 brake booster non-return valve is listed as 34331151533, which supersedes older numbers 34331102537, 34331116968, and 34331151532. This one is for later BMW applications like E30/E28 and does not cross to the 2002 part number, and the original seems to be straight fitted.
