Product Information

This offering from Genuine BMW is a replacement upper timing chain tensioner, found in certain diesel BMWs. Timing chain tensioners are tasked with maintaining the tension on the engine's timing chain. Over the course of the car's life, the timing tensioner can wear out and lose tension on the timing chain. This can cause the engine to skip timing. If you hear a loud rattle from your BMW's timing case we strongly recommend installing a new tensioner to see if the sound goes away. If the sound does not go away you will likely need to perform a timing chain service.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner

An Engine Timing Chain Tensioner preloads the timing chain to prevent slack in the timing chain system. Too much chain slack will result in derailment of the timing chain which could cause engine failure. Engine timing chain tensioners are typically oil fed so it is vital to verify you have adequate oil volume and pressure when troubleshooting the timing chain tensioner. Common failure systems include chain rattle or slap on startup, or camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner Failure Symptoms
  • Rattling or Clanking Noise: One of the most common symptoms of a failing timing chain tensioner is a noticeable rattling, clanking, or ticking noise, especially on startup. This is because the tensioner may no longer be maintaining proper tension on the chain, causing it to become loose and hit surrounding components.
  • Check Engine Light: A failing tensioner can cause timing issues that may trigger the vehicle’s check engine light. Common faults codes will correlate to a camshaft/ crankshaft fault as these sensors will detect that the timing is off.
  • Valvetrain or piston damage: As the timing being off significantly enough in an interference engine can cause the valvetrain to come into contact with the piston surface

About Genuine BMW

The original parts used by BMW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine BMW” brand. When ordering a Genuine BMW part you are guaranteed to get the same part that you would pick up from your local dealerships part department. Genuine BMW parts have been built to BMW’s stringent standards and are the same quality of the original parts used to build your Ultimate Driving Machine.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your BMW are not necessarily manufactured by BMW. No cause for concern, as BMW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for BMW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine BMW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a BMW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Trash!
Do not buy this. I canceled my order within an hour, but the FCP Euro claimed it had already shipped and refused to cancel. That was the first red flag. I then ordered the same timing chain tensioner from Amazon. Before shipping, the Amazon seller contacted me to request my VIN, confirmed compatibility, and disclosed that they are an actual BMW dealer selling parts through Amazon. When both parts arrived, the difference was obvious. The Amazon/BMW tensioner is noticeably heavier, has significantly stiffer spring tension, and the metal quality feels superior. By comparison, this part feels like a Chinese knockoff built to basic dimensions but made with inferior materials. The reduced stiffness suggests it does not meet BMW’s intended specifications. I will be posting side-by-side comparison photos on Reddit. Based on build quality alone, I would not trust this part in an engine. It will not provide the added tension if that's what you are lookign for. It is glossy and shiny looking while the Amazon tensioner looks and feels dull, heavy, and serious. You cannot depress it with your fingers completely like this one from FCP Euro.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Louis
Is this the old 27mm tensioner or the updated 24mm one?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Coming up with this as a 27mm tensioner bolt, not seeing a variant that is 24 unfortunately.
