Product Information
Includes square cut seal and dust boot, needed for repairing your brake caliper
Brake calipers are paramount to your BMW's braking performance. However, when you dissect a brake caliper you will be surprised to see how basic they really are. A single piston brake caliper consists of an aluminum or steel brake piston that is sealed inside the caliper bore via a rubber square cut seal. The piston is forced outward to squeeze the brake pads by the force of the brake fluid behind it. The square cut seal in this process rolls slightly and when the brake fluid pressure is reduced the square cut seal pulls the brake piston back slightly.
A corroded or damaged brake piston can easily shred or tear the square cut seal which will ultimately cause the brake caliper to seize. When repairing a seized brake caliper it is critical to replace the square cut seal and external dust boot. Brake caliper failure often occurs when debris gets past the external dust boot.
Disc brake caliper repair kits typically consist of seals, dust boots, and miscellaneous hardware that is often overlooked but critical to proper brake caliper operation. If these caliper components are damaged, or if uneven brake pad wear is observed, a new caliper repair kit should be installed. Fresh seals and dust boots should also be installed on every caliper rebuild. Higher mileage calipers, calipers with unknown service history, or brake systems with poor brake fluid conditions can also benefit from the components in a brake caliper repair kit.
Disc Brake Caliper Repair Kit Failure Symptoms- Ripped dust boots
- The caliper piston not moving freely in the caliper bore or seized in the bore
- Uneven brake pad wear
- Excessive noise under light braking
